2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M

by Cory J. Bonini on February 21, 2013 @ 11:35:32 PDT

Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore enjoyed a season for the ages in 2012, which helped vault him into being arguably the best defensive lineman in the 2013 NFL Draft class.

Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
A rare defensive talent

Moore was the first Aggies' defensive lineman in 20 years to lead the team in tackles (80) in '12. He posted 12.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. In 2011, playing rush linebacker in a 3-4 alignment, Moore racked up 72 tackles in 10 starts, forced four fumbles and recorded 8.5 quarterback takedowns.

  • Versatile and experienced at 3-4 outside linebacker and 4-3 defensive end
  • Incredibly athletic
  • Great lateral agility and straight-line speed
  • Experienced playing in coverage
  • Good in pursuit - hustles to make the play
  • Respectable repertoire of pass-rushing moves - spin, bull rush, strafe, dip, swim
  • Actively looks to strip the ball carrier
  • Immeasurable upside

  • Probably won't be an elite pass rusher at the next level - lacks a consistently explosive first step
  • Doesn't penetrate the backfield as effectively as he could against the run
  • Undersized (6-foot-3, 250 pounds) for defensive end
  • Was not active in blocking passes at the line - needs to show better awareness to clog passing lanes

Expected draft placement

Moore has all of the physical tools to dominate in the NFL. He best fits a Tampa 2 system. If teams view him as a 3-4 'backer as a pro, look for a possible trade up into the top five to land his services.

With that in mind, it is hard to imagine Moore falls past the defensive end-starved Detroit Lions (No. 5).
