It's given me strength in my legs, which I can already feel a difference taking ground balls, swinging the bat. There is something there, where in the last few years there hasn't been." Utley performed baseball activities throughout the offseason and fielded groundballs a week following the season, fielding anywhere from 50 to 80 balls a couple times a week for roughly six weeks.

It did not bother him while he was catching but made it difficult whenever the switch-hitting Grandal needed to bat from the left side of the plate. He is not expected to resume hitting until early next week. Grandal said he would be ready to play by May 28, when his 50-game suspension ends.

"I spend a lot of time with the catchers and (catching coordinator Jeff Datz) and all those guys. I'm just having fun with them and getting to know the pitchers. It's been great."

He hit .347 in 75 at-bats against lefties last year. Instead of guessing fastball and whiffing on offspeed pitches, Murphy took a more sound mental approach and didn't try to do too much.

Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour (knee) is already getting treatment after his knee surgery Friday, Feb. 15, and the swelling in his knee is already gone, enabling him to bend his knee completely. He is walking and standing without crutches and feels great, but he doesn't want to rush his progress. Dr. Doug Freedberg told Balfour that his knee looked great and a small patch of meniscus was shaved down. He's hoping to miss four weeks. Balfour said he could have pitched with the injury, but there was pain with sharp lateral movements.
