2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Keenan Allen, WR, California

by Cory J. Bonini on February 15, 2013 @ 17:52:22 PDT

California wide receiver Keenan Allen is a highly rated prospect that enters the 2013 NFL Draft as a junior.

His 2011 season was impressive, following a record-setting freshman campaign the year prior. As a sophomore, Allen posted 98 receptions for 1,343 yards and six scores. His 2012 stats left a lot to be desired, mainly because he missed the final three games of the year. In all, Allen caught 61 balls for 737 yards and a half-dozen trips to paydirt.

Keenan Allen, WR, California
Natural athlete

Strengths

  • Excellent size at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds
  • A natural hand catcher
  • Quality route runner
  • Willing, capable blocker - shows through better downfield in this area
  • Ultra competitive
  • Lines up all over the field
  • Big-play threat with good field vision to make the timely cutback
  • Sneaky speedy - does a great job accelerating out of his breaks

Weaknesses

  • Allen will never be confused for a burner
  • Coming off a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee (suffered Oct. 27)
  • Lacks elite short-area burst and elusiveness
  • Occasional concentration lapses - tends to hear footsteps over the middle
  • Probably could have benefited from one more year in school; took advantage of a weak wideout class

Expected draft placement

Allen stands out as the best all-around wide receiver prospect in the draft. He could go as early as No. 8 to the Buffalo Bills but is more likely to come off the board with any one of the following selections: Miami Dolphins (12th), Carolina Panthers (14th), St. Louis Rams (16th), Pittsburgh Steelers (17th) or Minnesota Vikings (23rd).

Pittsburgh seems like the most likely landing spot for Allen, but they may covet the more explosive Cordarrelle Patterson with that choice.
