1) Carl Crawford, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Team: Josh Shepardson, Baseball Prospectus | Roster
Trout was my only outfielder, so I felt compelled to grab my second outfielder with this pick. Lots of risk, but there is also the potential for a big payoff as well.
New uni, same SB promise
2) Josh Rutledge, SS, Colorado Rockies
Team: Mark Bloom, RotoExperts/SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio | Roster
Sometimes you have to think outside the box at your draft. So, my idea was to take Rutledge (who qualifies currently at SS) and move him to 2B after he plays enough games there. Then I have a guy who can hit 20 HR and 10 SB at a scarce position.
3) Mark Trumbo, 1B/3B/OF, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Team: Ray Flowers, Baseball Guys/SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio | Roster
He was amazing in the first half, then awful in the second. All told he hit 32 homers with 95 RBIs while batting .268. I'll gladly take a repeat at this point of the draft
4) Joe Nathan, RP, Texas Rangers
Team: Bill Macey, Baseball HQ | Roster
I wasn't quite ready to take a closer here - I prefer to be in the middle of the run on the position than be the one who tries to start one - but there weren't any batters I preferred. Nathan looked fully back from TJS last year and he doesn't have too much competition in the Ranger pen. He should have plenty of save chances and a shot at 40+ saves in 2013.
5) J.J. Putz, RP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Jeff Paur, RTSports | Roster
After the last pick, I was targeting a closer in this round. I was really hoping for Joe Nathan but once again he goes the pick before me. Putz was the next on my board. He was a little erratic last season but finished well and I like his upside for the coming season. He should get plenty of save chances.
6) Ryan Howard, 1B, Philadelphia Phillies
Team: Michael Stein, The Hardball Times | Roster
Sometimes you just have to go with your gut instinct. Ryan Howard was still on the board and I felt it was time to scoop him up and savor the 30 home runs and 100 RBI he will likely contribute now that he is healthy and in better shape. The batting average could be a problem, but that is worth the trade-off for getting such power at this point of the draft.
The round ends....
