2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah

Utah phenom Star Lotulelei is the premier defensive tackle in the 2013 NFL Draft and ranks among the top players regardless of position.

Shining Star of the draft class

The senior is a disruptive force in the middle, as evidenced by his 5.0 sacks and three forced fumbles. He also logged four fumble recoveries in 2012.

Strengths

  • Powerful, stout build (6-foot-3, 320 pounds)
  • Excellent first step
  • Versatile - can play 4-3 defensive tackle, 3-4 nose tackle or 3-4 end
  • Rises to the occasion in big games
  • Mature - dedicated family man, great teammate and well-respected leader
  • Explosive tackler
  • Improving techniques as a pass rusher
  • Has the potential to be a Day 1 impact player at the next level

Weaknesses

  • Occasionally relies too much on brute strength and athleticism to make plays
  • Has a potential heart condition that hasn't been confirmed through additional testing
  • Can struggle to shed blocks - often due to his short reach
  • Sat out 2009 season during a transfer year, which means he'll be 24 years old as a rookie
  • Has experienced minor conditioning issues in his early collegiate days

Expected draft placement

Lotulelei has all of the traits you look for in a dominant defensive lineman and should quickly rise to the ranks of the league's upper-echelon defenders.

Look for the Oakland Raiders to strongly consider him at No. 3 overall, and it is difficult to imagine Lotulelei will fall beyond the Tennessee Titans' 10th pick as long as teams are not worried about his health.
