First Baseman

1B | Jason Giambi | free agent | Free Agents
Free-agent 1B Jason Giambi (Rockies) said he has received calls from a few teams but has not signed with anyone yet. He has been working out five days a week in hopes of resuming his career.

1B | Mark Teixeira | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira acknowledges that age has taken a toll on his batting average (.308 in 2008, .251 in 2012) and that it is a trend that is unlikely to reverse course. "This is my 11th year," Teixeira said in a Wall Street Journal interview. "I'm not going to play 10 more years. I want 5 or 6 good ones. So that would say I'm on the backside of my career. And instead of trying to do things differently on the backside of my career, why not focus on the things I do well, and try to be very good at that?"

1B | Ike Davis | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets 1B Ike Davis is expected to arrive at spring training camp Wednesday, Feb. 6, even though position players are not required to be on hand until Feb. 16.

1B | Fernando Tatis | free agent | Free Agents,
Updating a previous report, the Baltimore Orioles are not expected to sign free-agent RP Arthur Rhodes (Cardinals) or 3B Fernando Tatis (Mets) to minor league deals.

1B | Justin Smoak | Seattle Mariners | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Seattle Mariners inked 3B Kyle Seager, 1B Justin Smoak, INF Francisco Martinez, Ps Blake Beavan, Lucas Luetge and Chance Ruffin and OFs Julio Morban, Carlos Peguero, Eric Thames and Casper Wells to undisclosed one-year deals for the 2013 season.

1B | Mat Gamel | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers 1B Mat Gamel will need to work out in the outfield and at third base because when 1B Corey Hart (knee) returns from his knee surgery, Gamel won't be the starting first baseman, according to manager Ron Roenicke. 1B Hunter Morris could be brought up if Gamel struggles before Hart returns. Morris will open the season at Triple-A Nashville after hitting .303 with 28 home runs, 40 doubles and 113 RBIs last year at Double-A Huntsville.

1B | Lars Anderson | Chicago White Sox | Transaction
The Chicago White Sox claimed 1B Lars Anderson off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, Feb. 1. Anderson hit .259 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs in 93 games for Triple-A Pawtucket for the Boston Red Sox last season. He also hit only .196 (11-for-56) in 18 games with the Cleveland Indians' top minor league affiliate after being traded at midseason.

Second Baseman

2B | Maicer Izturis | Toronto Blue Jays | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays INF Maicer Izturis was apparently given some sort of assurance he'd be the front runner at second base before he signed. That means OF/INF Emilio Bonifacio will likely serve as a utilityman.

2B | Kelly Johnson | Tampa Bay Rays | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Tampa Bay Rays will need to remove three players from their 40-man roster this week when contracts for 2B Kelly Johnson, RP Kyle Farnsworth and DH Luke Scott are finalized. INFs Reid Brignac and Elliot Johnson, C Stephen Vogt and RP Dane De La Rosa are among the players who could be designated for assignment.

SS | Derek Jeter | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter (ankle) took 55 grounders Monday, Feb. 4, in his first on-field action since the 2012 postseason.

SS | Hanley Ramirez | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez may serve primarily as a designated hitter during the Caribbean Series. Miguel Tejada is starting at shortstop for the Caribbean team. Other plans for him to play shortstop in winter ball were scrapped due to a minor shoulder injury that relegated him to DH duties.

Third Baseman

3B | Evan Longoria | Tampa Bay Rays | Injury, Fantasy
Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria (hamstring) is fully recovered from offseason surgery on his left hamstring and is expected to be an active participant throughout spring training camp. "The leg is ready," he said.

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) is reportedly splitting time between New York and Miami rehabbing his surgically-repaired left hip. He is working closely with Dr. Bryan Kelly of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, as well as his personal trainer, Tony Ambler-Wright and another physical trainer from Kelly's team when he is in Miami. It is uncertain if Rodriguez will join the team at its spring training facility when position players are scheduled to report Feb. 15.

3B | Jordan Pacheco | Colorado Rockies | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies 3B/C Jordan Pacheco recently spent several days working with team catching instructor Jerry Weinstein in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with an emphasis on blocking drills and improving throwing mechanics. He could see more time behind the plate in spring training, as a result of Ramon Hernandez playing for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, although Hernandez and Wilin Rosario are still expected to get the bulk of the work at catcher during the regular season.

3B | Russ Canzler | New York Yankees | Transaction, Fantasy
The New York Yankees designated OF Russ Canzler for assignment Friday, Feb. 1, to make room on the roster for DH Travis Hafner.

3B | Scott Sizemore | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy
Oakland Athletics 3B Scott Sizemore will see time at both second and third base in spring training, but third base will be 3B Josh Donaldson's job to lose. INFs Adam Rosales and Grant Green will also be given looks at those positions.

3B | Martin Prado | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
The Arizona Diamondbacks have not yet decided where 3B Martin Prado will hit in the batting order this year, even though he has primarily hit second in the lineup in his career. Last year, 2B Aaron Hill performed well out of the No. 2 spot. "I've been in the second hole pretty much all my career because everybody is saying I can put the ball in play. I can hit the ball to right field and handle a lot of situations, so that's more me," Prado said when asked where he preferred to hit. "But the way I say it, I can adjust myself to any situation in the game."

C | Ryan Hanigan | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy
Cincinnati Reds C Ryan Hanigan will enter spring training as the team's primary catcher ahead of C Devin Mesoraco.

C | Miguel Olivo | Cincinnati Reds | Transaction, Fantasy

Chicago Cubs C Welington Castillo will be the team's starting catcher this season, and he will be backed up by C Dioner Navarro. OF | Marlon Byrd | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Marlon Byrd is expected to compete with OF Andrew Brown for the team's fifth outfield job in spring training. OFs Lucas Duda, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Mike Baxter and Colin Cowgill are also in the mix for New York.

OF | Kevin Mattison | Miami Marlins | Transaction
Miami Marlins OF Kevin Mattison cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors Friday, Feb. 1.

OF | Corey Hart | Milwaukee Brewers | Injury, Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers 1B Corey Hart (knee) said he has already started his rehab after undergoing surgery on his knee last week, and he'll undergo an MRI exam in three weeks. He said there is a "realistic" chance that he could be ready to play by the end of April, nearly a month ahead of his projected return date. "If it takes a little longer then mid to end of May but I feel good about end of April," said Hart, "So basically like 2011, when I came back and hit 26 homers in five months."

SP | Kevin Millwood | Retired Players | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy,
Former major-league SP Kevin Millwood called it a career Friday, Feb. 1. Millwood's highlights include two no-hitters one done on his own with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2003 and the other as part of a six-man effort with the Seattle Mariners this past season. Millwood, who turned 38 years old in December, told the Shelby (N.C.) Star that he was "just ready to retire" after agent Scott Boras couldn't hook up a deal with the Atlanta Braves or Tampa Bay Rays, teams that play near his home in Gainesville, Ga.

SP | Joe Saunders | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Baltimore Orioles are still interested in re-signing free-agent SP Joe Saunders even though they have added SP Jair Jurrjens.

SP | Francisco Liriano | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said the team continues to work on reaching a deal with SP Francisco Liriano (arm) before spring training. "The process continues," Huntington said. "We have ongoing conversations. I'm not an oddsmaker, so I don't know if it is likely or unlikely that we will add another pitcher." Liriano's injury makes it unlikely that he'll be ready in time for spring training, and it's unknown if he'll be healthy by opening day. The team wants to sign him to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, but Liriano is holding out for at least a one-year major league contract with a 2014 option.

SP | Manny Parra | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy,
Updating a previous item, the Cincinnati Reds signed SP Manny Parra to a one-year, $1 million deal Friday, Feb. 1. Parra can make an extra $400,000 in incentives for games pitched in relief; $50,000 each for 45 and 50 games and $100,000 each for 55, 60 and 65 games

SP | Chad Billingsley | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy,
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (elbow) said he isn't having any issues with his elbow as he preps for spring training. He said he feels "absolutely great." "Tomorrow I'll throw off a mound for the eighth time and I've had no issues," Billingsley said. "It's just like any other offseason." He resumed throwing in October of last year and threw two simulated games in Arizona, touching 94 mph. Billingsley shut it down for a month and resumed throwing in January. If he can remain healthy, he'll slot into the team's starting rotation as the No. 4 starter.

SP | Mark Rogers | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy,
Milwaukee Brewers SP Mark Rogers is out of minor league options, meaning he will most likely be on the team's opening day roster barring an injury. Rogers is the only pitcher on the squad that is vying for a starting rotation spot that is out of options. "Clearly, we can't get him back to the minor leagues, so we're really focused on trying to get him as an active member of this pitching staff," assistant general manager Gord Ash said. SPs Chris Narveson, Wily Peralta and Mike Fiers are also competing for spots in the rotation.

SP | Carlos Carrasco | Cleveland Indians | Injury, Fantasy,
Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco (elbow) will likely be on an innings limit this season as he comes back from a right elbow injury last season. Several MLB teams have reportedly offered a minor-league deal to free-agent RP Hideki Okajima (Japanese League).

RP | Derek Lowe | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Houston Astros and New York Mets could be interested in free-agent P Derek Lowe (Yankees), although it is becoming increasingly likely that he may have to settle for pitching out of the bullpen rather than starting.

RP | Cesar Cabral | New York Yankees | Injury,
New York Yankees RP Cesar Cabral (elbow) is not expected to be 100 percent until after the start of the regular season.

RP | Mark Hendrickson | free agent | Free Agents

RP | Frank Francisco | New York Mets | Free Agents, Fantasy,
New York Mets RP Frank Francisco's hold on the closer role heading into spring training is not firm, with the club looking for more bullpen help after adding RPs Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins recently. The remaining options for the Mets are free-agent RP Jose Valverde (Tigers), Brian Wilson (Giants), Brandon Lyon (Blue Jays) and Francisco Rodriguez (Brewers). Valverde and Rodriguez are both represented by Scott Boras, and New York has made it clear that they won't overpay for another bullpen piece. General manager Sandy Alderson has made it clear that he is not committed to using Francisco as the primary closer this season. Alderson even went as far as saying he isn't "terribly comfortable" with Francisco being the opening day closer.

RP | Roy Oswalt | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
Free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Rangers) isn't interested in becoming a reliever, or more specifically, a closer. The New York Mets visited with Oswalt and tried to convince him to make the switch to a late-inning reliever, according to two baseball sources. However, Oswalt won't be an option because of his lack of interest in this move.

RP | Sergio Santos | Toronto Blue Jays | Injury, Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons has not named a closer heading into the season, meaning RP Sergio Santos (shoulder) will likely compete with RP Casey Janssen for the role in spring training. Santos is recovered from his shoulder surgery and plans to report early to spring training.
