First Baseman

1B | Mitch Moreland | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
If the Texas Rangers need a replacement in the outfield, either due to injury or a potential suspension, the thought is that 1B Mitch Moreland or 3B Mike Olt might be used in the outfield.

1B | Brad Hawpe | Pittsburgh Pirates | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
The Pittsburgh Pirates backup infielder job is a major need, and four of the five non-roster infielders bring Major League experience. 1B Brad Hawpe is in camp looking for work, and he'll be battling 3B Matt Hague, 2B Anderson Hernandez and INF Ivan De Jesus, among others.

1B | Ryan Garko | Colorado Rockies | Transaction
The Colorado Rockies signed free-agent OF Greg Golson (White Sox) and 1B Ryan Garko (Rays) to minor league deals Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The Miami Marlins will have at least 71 players in camp when the team opens spring training Feb. 11, and that includes 31 non-roster invitees. Of those 31 non-roster players, 14 are from the organization. The 17 minor-league free agents looking to catch on include Ps Jonathan Albaladejo, John Maine, Doug Mathis, Zach Phillips, Chad Qualls, Kevin Slowey, Jordan Smith, Mitch Talbot and Michael Wuertz. The non-roster minor-league free agents are C Craig Tatum, INFs Matt Downs, Nick Green, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Ed Lucas and Chris Valaika. The OFs are Jordan Brown and Austin Kearns. "It's a relatively large group and a lot of opportunity and I think there will be some good competition in a number of areas," team executive Larry Beinfest said.

SS | Cliff Pennington | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks SS Cliff Pennington will receive a $1 million signing bonus for his two-year, $5 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. Pennington will make $1.25 million this year and $2.75 million in 2014.

SS | Eduardo Nunez | New York Yankees | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Yankees are interested in signing free-agent DH Travis Hafner (Indians) to a one-year, incentive-laden major league deal for him to serve as their designated hitter against mostly right-handed pitchers. Hafner could also play some first base. INF Eduardo Nunez and OFs Matt Diaz, Russ Canzler and Juan Rivera could also platoon at the DH spot.

Third Baseman

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) may opt to retire after hip surgery, according to a source. "I don't know why he would want to go through the pain of rehabbing and trying to play up to the caliber of player he was, and come back to a game where nobody wants him," said a baseball official. "If he did that, he'd be a part-time player and presumably unable to achieve any of the incentive clauses in the contract or even the milestones."

3B | Chase Headley | San Diego Padres | Transaction, Fantasy
The San Diego Padres avoided arbitration with 3B Chase Headley Wednesday, Jan. 30, by agreeing to a one-year, $8.575 million deal, according to sources. Headley is receiving a raise of $5.1 million.

C | Ali Solis | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates C Ali Solis will see plenty of early action in spring training before he leaves to play for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

Outfielder

OF | Avisail Garcia | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy
Detroit Tigers OF Avisail Garcia may start the season in the minor leagues and may even play the full season there if manager Jim Leyland has a say. "Obviously he's not going to be the everyday left fielder," Leyland said. "At least not right now." Leyland believes Garcia, 21, would be best served playing every day instead of sitting on a bench part-time.

OF | Ryan Kalish | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous items, Boston Red Sox OF Ryan Kalish (shoulder) may miss up to six months due to his recent shoulder surgery. Sources indicate he may not be ready to start baseball activities until mid-August.

OF | Michael Bourn | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Texas Rangers have not renewed their interest in free-agent OF Michael Bourn (Braves), according to industry sources.

OF | Felix Pie | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Felix Pie was the starting center fielder on Opening Day in 2008 for the Chicago Cubs, and for the Baltimore Orioles in 2010. However, he spent all of last season in the minors with the Atlanta Braves, and he is in camp simply looking for a roster spot.

OF | Chris Pettit | Baltimore Orioles | Transaction,
The Baltimore Orioles signed free-agent OF Chris Pettit (Rockies), RP Manny Delcarmen (Yankees) and RP Robert Delaney (Marlins) to minor league deals Wednesday, Jan. 30. Pettit will not receive an invite to spring training.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Kip Wells | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
Free-agent P Kip Wells (Padres) threw a bullpen session for the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, Jan. 30, although it is uncertain if the team is close to offering him a deal.

SP | Francisco Liriano | Pittsburgh Pirates | Injury, Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (arm) will wind up coming to camp on a minor-league deal and invite to spring training once all of the roadblocks are cleared up to formalizing his signing. On a minor-league deal, the team will have ample time to figure out how to make room on the 40-man roster for the veteran, whose participation figures to be delayed due to the broken right arm that complicated his signing.

SP | Gerrit Cole | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SPs Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon will be in major league camp during spring training, but the team has vowed to not rush the pitching prospects, even if they get off to a strong start in camp.

SP | Ryan Rowland-Smith | free agent | Free Agents,
There were between 15 and 20 scouts on hand in Arizona to watch free-agent Ps Mark Lowe (Rangers) and Ryan Rowland-Smith (Mariners) throw bullpen sessions Wednesday, Jan. 30.

SP | Kyle McPherson | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy,
Pittsburgh Pirates SPs Kyle McPherson and Jeff Locke are both expected to start the season with Triple-A Indianapolis with no room left for the starting rotation after the signing of SP Francisco Liriano.

SP | Julio Teheran | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren feels SP Julio Teheran regained his form while pitching in the Dominican Republic Winter League this winter. "I think we saw a guy who learned from some of the trials over the course of this past season and re-emerged as a top-notch prospect in the winter," Wren said. "He showed his pitchability and stuff that we didn't see a whole lot of during 2012. But he was really impressive in December." Teheran will enter camp as the favorite for the No. 5 rotation post. His poor 2012 season with Triple-A Gwinnett was based on mechanical issues, but he made some adjustments late in the season. Teheran, with the help of special assistant Dom Chiti, raised his glove, which helped Teheran regain more of a fluid and athletic delivery. He had an ERA of 3.23 in seven starts in winter league, allowing just two hits and throwing 16 2/3 scoreless innings in his last three starts.

SP | Brandon Beachy | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) is feeling great, and his elbow hasn't had any setbacks during a throwing program as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery last season. Beachy is hoping he'll be ready to return to action in late June. He expects to increase the distance of a long toss program from 120 feet to 150 feet within the next week, and the next step should be him simulating his pitching motion while throwing off flat ground. Beachy could be cleared to start throwing off a mound with a controlled motion in late February or early March, if he doesn't have any setbacks.

SP | Andrew Brackman | Chicago White Sox | Transaction,
The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent SP Andrew Brackman (Reds) to a minor league deal Wednesday, Jan. 30.

SP | Justin Verlander | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
There is increasing optimism in Team USA that Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander will pitch in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, according to baseball sources. He'll decide by Feb. 20 whether he will take the final pitching spot on the roster. Verlander would still like to see how the early portion of spring training is going before making a final decision. Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy is another option for the final pitching spot.

SP | Stephen Strasburg | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg said his body is stronger and he is more mature heading into the 2013 season, and his arm is feeling good. Strasburg resumed throwing after Christmas and threw his first bullpen session last Friday and the second Monday, Jan. 28. He is looking forward to learning from new teammate SP Dan Haren, too. "I think I can learn a lot from him, especially the way he pitches and his repertoire," Strasburg said. "He definitely has nasty stuff. I know he throws that splitter, but I think I can really learn from how he uses his splitter because my changeup is more that type of pitch than a conventional changeup."

Relief Pitcher

RP | LaTroy Hawkins | New York Mets | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The New York Mets have signed free-agent RP LaTroy Hawkins (Angels) to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. No financial terms were disclosed.

RP | Roy Oswalt | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
It appears remote that free-agent P Roy Oswalt (Rangers) and the New York Mets will end up agreeing on a deal anytime soon. "Nothing going on with Oswalt," one team insider said Wednesday, Jan. 30.

RP | Michael Zagurski | Pittsburgh Pirates | Depth Chart Tidbit,
Pittsburgh Pirates P Kris Johnson has a chance to make a quick impact in spring training. The left-handed posted an 8-4 record with a 3.19 ERA between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis last season, and he pitched well in the Dominican Winter League for Escogido. Johnson is expected to battle RP Michael Zagurski for a left-handed job in the team's bullpen.

The Miami Marlins claimed RP Sam Dyson off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, Jan. 30, and designated OF Kevin Mattison for assignment in a corresponding move.
