Fantasy football players in the news

Quarterback

QB | Ryan Fitzpatrick | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson wants to see the team bring in another quarterback to give QB Ryan Fitzpatrick some serious competition for the starting job. "Because competition brings out the best in us," Johnson said. "If we went out and got another quarterback, who knows what'll happen? Fitz may still win, or the other guy my win. Let it happen like that." However, Johnson is still confident the team can win with Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Fitzpatrick was ranked 32nd out of 33 quarterbacks this year with a 27.5 completion percentage on passes that traveled at least 20 yards.

QB | Andrew Luck | Indianapolis Colts | Injury, Fantasy
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck will play in the 2013 Pro Bowl for the AFC squad, replacing New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (undisclosed), who won't participate due to an injury.

QB | Andy Dalton | Cincinnati Bengals | Fantasy
The Cincinnati Bengals appear to be searching for a backup quarterback to QB Andy Dalton with QB Bruce Gradkowski headed for free agency this offseason. However, they don't want to push Dalton out of the starting role, so they are unlikely to use early draft picks on a QB. Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese will take a look at North Carolina State QB Mike Glennon, Florida State QB EJ Manuel, Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson, Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib and University of Miami QB Zac Dysert this week. Glennon has been receiving the most praise from evaluators, and they believe he might be in the best position to succeed immediately in the NFL.

QB | Christian Ponder | Minnesota Vikings | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Minnesota Vikings will be looking for quarterbacks to compete with QB Joe Webb to the backup position for QB Christian Ponder this offseason. Free-agent QBs Derek Anderson (Panthers), Matt Moore (Dolphins), David Carr (Giants), Matt Leinart (Raiders), Byron Leftwich (Steelers), Bruce Gradkowski (Bengals), Jason Campbell (Bears) and Rex Grossman (Redskins) are options.

QB | Mark Sanchez | New York Jets | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, the New York Jets' top offseason priority will be to bring in another quarterback that will compete with QB Mark Sanchez for the starting role. Sanchez's 55.1 career completion percentage is way too low for a QB in a west coast offense, though, so he isn't expected to be the answer. Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Flynn, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick and San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith seem like unrealistic options because of the Jets' salary cap issues. It's unlikely that New York will use their first-round selection (ninth overall) to select a quarterback in this year's draft.

QB | Matt Ryan | Atlanta Falcons | Injury, Fantasy
Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan (shoulder) is expected to wear a sling for around 10 days and is facing a four-week rehab for his Grade 2 AC joint sprain.

Running Back

RB | Steven Jackson | St. Louis Rams | Fantasy
The Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons could be eying St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson if he decides to void his deal by March. However, none of those three teams are expected to have much salary cap room, meaning Jackson will have to play for much less than the $7 million he'd receive in St. Louis.

RB | Josh Vaughan | Atlanta Falcons | Transaction
The Atlanta Falcons have signed RB Josh Vaughan, WR Marcus Jackson, WR James Rodgers, TE Andrew Szczerba, OG Jacques McClendon, DT Micanor Regis, LB Pat Schiller and CB Peyton Thompson. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

RB | Rashard Mendenhall | Free Agent | Fantasy
The Pittsburgh Steelers will search for a featured back, most likely through the draft, next season because they feel RBs Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman and Baron Batch are complementary backs at best. Batch should have an increased role next season after the team released RB Chris Rainey. Impending free-agent RB Rashard Mendenhall is not expected to be retained.

Fullback

FB | James Develin | New England Patriots | Transaction
The New England Patriots have signed FB James Develin, WR Jeremy Ebert and LB Jeff Tarpinian to futures contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Wide Receiver

WR | Larry Fitzgerald | Arizona Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald will play in the 2013 Pro Bowl for the NFC squad this weekend as a replacement for Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall (hip). This will be Fitzgerald's seventh Pro Bowl selection, which is the most by an offensive player in Cardinals history.

WR | Pierre Garcon | Washington Redskins | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon (foot) is still debating whether to have surgery on his foot, but is leaning towards resting the foot. Garcon should make a final decision in the coming weeks. Garcon does not like the idea of having a surgery that would require three to four months to heal, but offer no guarantees of correcting the issue.

WR | Wes Welker | Free Agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The New England Patriots are unlikely to put the franchise tag on impending free-agent WR Wes Welker for the second straight year, because they'd have to pay him $11.4 million in 2013. It appears he'll either sign a multi-year deal or hit the road packing in free agency.

WR | Andre Holmes | New England Patriots | Transaction
The New England Patriots have signed WR Andre Holmes and DT Tracy Robertson to futures contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Tight End

TE | Tony Gonzalez | Atlanta Falcons | Fantasy
The Atlanta Falcons are holding out hope that TE Tony Gonzalez has a change of heart and decides to stick around for another season after he strongly hinted that he will retire following the team's loss in the NFC Championship Game to the San Francisco 49ers. "I'm hoping for the five percent," head coach Mike Smith said, referring to Gonzalez's season-long assertion that he's 95 percent certain he will retire. "Tony handled this very well all season long. I don't think he's deviated from that." Gonzalez probably will not play in the Pro Bowl this weekend.

Offensive Tackle

OT | Bryan Bulaga | Green Bay Packers | Injury
Green Bay Packers OT Bryan Bulaga (hip) said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp after suffering a hip injury during the season. He likely will miss most, if not all, of the offseason workouts.

Offensive Line

OL | J.C. Tretter | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Former NFL general manager Phil Savage, who runs the Senior Bowl, thinks NFL draft prospect OG J.C. Tretter has the versatility to make him valuable to an NFL team. "JC Tretter is a great story," Savage said. "A high school quarterback turned tight end and then played left tackle for two years. He'll play guard (this week) and snap the ball some. He's got excellent feet. He's a very good athlete. If he can hold up strength-wise."

Defensive Line

DL | Sione Pouha | New York Jets | Injury
New York Jets DT Sione Pouha (back) will not need to undergo surgery to repair his back injury and plans to rehab the injury.

DL | Chandler Jones | New England Patriots | Injury
New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (ankles) said he will meet with the team's medical staff Monday, Jan. 21, to determine if he needs surgery on either of his injured ankles. Jones injured his right ankle in Week 11 and his left ankle in the Divisional Round playoff game.

Linebacker

LB | Desmond Bishop | Green Bay Packers | Injury
Green Bay Packers LB Desmond Bishop (hamstring) is still not completely recovered from the ruptured hamstring tendon he suffered in the preseason.

LB | Brad Jones | Free Agent | Free Agents
The Green Bay Packers would like to re-sign impending free-agent LB Brad Jones this offseason.

Cornerback

CB | B.W. Webb | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Former NFL general manager Phil Savage, who runs the Senior Bowl, thinks NFL draft prospect CB B.W. Webb can play the slot corner as well as return kicks. "Webb is fast and has cover ability and he can return," Savage said.

CB | Aqib Talib | Free Agent | Injury
The loss of New England Patriots CB Aqib Talib (thigh) in the first half of the team's AFC Championship Game loss to the Baltimore Ravens was crucial. Ravens QB Joe Flacco couldn't find a comfort zone in the first half with Talib covering his receivers brilliantly. After the injury, New England was forced to use CBs Marquice Cole and Kyle Arrington in the secondary. Arrington excelled in the slot and Cole was brought in mainly to serve as a special teams player. Baltimore attacked often through the air in the second half and exposed the play of Cole and Arrington. Flacco passed for 140 yards a touchdown in the third quarter and added two more TDs in the fourth quarter.

CB | Will Davis | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Utah State CB Will Davis has seen his draft stock increase during the season and could make himself a first-round prospect if he performs well against some of the top wide receivers during the Senior Bowl.

CB | Tyrann Mathieu | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Former Louisiana State CB Tyrann Mathieu talked with representatives for the Washington Redskins and New York Jets at Senior Bowl practice Monday, Jan. 21.

Strong Safety

SS | Kenny Phillips | Free Agent | Free Agents
There is a sense that the New York Giants will let impending free-agent SS Kenny Phillips leave via free agency.
