The Arizona Diamondbacks have had preliminary discussion about a contract extension for 2B Aaron Hill. He'll make $5.5 million in 2013 in the last year of a two-year, $11 million deal.

2B | Ian Kinsler | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler (ankle) is happy to remain at second base this year and feels he has plenty left to contribute after having a down season in 2012. "Second base is where I want to play and I still feel I have a lot to give this team in that position. It's nice that I'm at a position where I think I'll help us win." An offseason ankle injury before last season bothered him until July and hurt his ability to run the bases, he admitted. Kinsler said his ankle feels fine now, and he's been working on his speed and swing in the offseason.

2B | Omar Infante | Detroit Tigers | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers 2B Omar Infante (wrist) is healing fine and is joining a team in the Venezuelan Winter League this week. His agent, Scott Pucino, said Infante's wrist "is healing perfectly." His injury did not require surgery.

Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (groin) may not play for Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic because he might not be cleared by the committee. The committee would have to insure the remaining $140 million left on his contract. Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (knee) is going through a similar process to play for Team Canada.

"If we win the World Series, I guarantee you I'm going to retire," Hairston said. "You can't get any better than that." He added that his surgically repaired left hip isn't bothering him and he won't be limited at all during spring training. Hairston could back up OF Carl Crawford in left field or be used extensively at third base if 3B Luis Cruz doesn't suffice.

Henry spent time with Single-A South Bend and Visalia, with the Arizona Diamondbacks before being released.

C | Russell Martin | Pittsburgh Pirates | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Pirates C Russell Martin will play for Team Canada in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Tampa Bay Rays C David Wendt was suspended 50 games Monday, Jan. 14, after testing positive for Methylhexaneamine. Wendt was playing for Double-A Montgomery last year.

Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario will not play in the 2013 World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic. Rosario is passing up the opportunity in order to improve his defense behind the plate in spring training. He led the league in passed balls last season.

C | Brian McCann | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (shoulder) expects to be ready to play on opening day after having offseason surgery on his right shoulder. Anchors were placed in the posterior portion of his shoulder and a labrum tear was also fixed during surgery in October. He will visit with Dr. Xavier Duralde Tuesday, Jan. 15, to see if he can resume playing catch at the end of the week. McCann might have to wait to swing a bat for another two weeks, though. "Being three months out of surgery, I feel like I'm ahead of schedule," McCann said. "I feel better each day, and I'm very encouraged by the signs that I have received recently. Now that I've had the surgery, I can tell a huge difference with my range of motion and flexibility. This is as free as my shoulder has been for a few years." He was initially believed to miss at least the first two weeks of the season.

Texas Rangers RP Joakim Soria would love to have the chance to close again, although he's fine with serving as RP Joe Nathan's setup man this season. Soria will have a base salary of $2 million this year and a $5.5 million salary in 2014. He'll have a $7 million option for 2015, with a $500,000 buyout. He'll receive a $500,000 bonus this year if he's on the active roster for one day. His 2014 salary can jump from $100,000 to $1 million more depending how many games he finishes in 2013; he'll get $100,000 if he finishes 10 games and another $100,000 each on his 2014 contract for 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 60, 65 and 70 games finished. Soria has plenty of other incentives in his contract for games finished and innings pitched.
