History 101: Eli Manning should struggle vs. 'Skins

      November 30, 2012 @ 14:39:02 PDT

Following a three-game stretch in which he failed to throw a single touchdown pass, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning unloaded on the Green Bay Packers in Week 12 to the tune of 249 yards and three scoring strikes.

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants
Hardly a lineup lock this week

That means he is back, right, and fantasy owners can count him reliable again? Not so fast, says this guy.

Manning has a great matchup on paper against his rival Washington Redskins. This defense has given up the eighth most fantasy points (20.3) per game to the quarterback position in the last month and the second most over the duration of the season. However, if history is any kind of prognosticative measuring stick, Eli could struggle mightily against the 'Skins this week.

His 337-yard, one-TD Week 7 performance this year was Manning's best outing against them since 2009 and only the second game in his career with at least 300 yards versus this group. The two-time Super Bowl champ has one fantasy effort with more than two passing touchdowns and only three games with more than a single offensive score.

As you can see, it hasn't been a pretty go of it for Eli against Washington. He hasn't thrown a TD pass in three of his last five meetings with them, and Manning has had at least one pass picked off in eight of his last night games against the Redskins.

Long story short, you may want to consider other options this week or at least temper your expectations for Manning. In the event your playoffs are on the line, starting another quarterback should be one of your primary concerns this week. Some waiver wire options to consider include Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Ryan Tannehill, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chad Henne and Brandon Weeden.
