Fantasy Football Hail Mary: Beanie Wells can help your squad
November 1, 2012 @ 16:53:04 PDT
Compared to past weeks, there wasn't a frenzy of waiver wire activity heading into Week 9, and if you were hurting at the running back position before, you might be in even more dire straits.
This could be the time where you have to dig deep. Those bye weeks are still flowing, unfortunately. Ronnie Hillman, who Nicholas Minnix touched on recently, is a guy that we really like to have a nice second half in a complementary role to Willis McGahee. He's almost certainly worth adding in your league if you need more depth.
But don't forget about an injured running back that is working his way back: Beanie Wells.
He currently sits on Arizona's Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list after suffering a severe turf toe injury in Week 3. However, per reports, he's been running well and is on schedule to rejoin practices next week. Wells will be eligible to return in Week 12 against the St. Louis Rams.
Ryan Williams (shoulder surgery) is done for the year and LaRod Stephens-Howling isn't suited to be a primary back despite posting a 100-yard rushing effort a few weeks ago against the Minnesota Vikings. William Powell is a crapshoot as well.
Ken Whisenhunt knows Wells is Arizona's best bet for consistent production out of the backfield down the stretch, providing he doesn't suffer any setbacks that will set back his return date. By then, Kevin Kolb (ribs) should be back in action, too, and he showed earlier this year that he can move this offense down the field.
If you have the roster space and can afford to take on Wells, it wouldn't hurt to do so. When he returns, he'll be fully healthy and will be running on a fresh set of legs.
