The New York Yankees chose to exercise their 2013 options on 2B Robinson Cano, OF Curtis Granderson and RP David Aardsma Monday, Oct. 29.


SS | Jhonny Peralta | Detroit Tigers | Transaction
The Detroit Tigers exercised SS Jhonny Peralta's $6 million option for 2013.

SS | Javier Baez | Chicago Cubs | Injury
Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez (thumb) may sit out the rest of the Arizona Fall League after injuring his left thumb over the weekend. He was hitting .211 in 14 games with the Mesa Solar Sox but was leading the leading with 16 RBIs and was tied with four home runs. Baez will be ready to play in spring training, though.

SS | Stephen Drew | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
The Oakland Athletics declined to pick up SS Stephen Drew's option for the 2013 season Monday, Oct. 29, making him a free agent.

Third Baseman

3B | Placido Polanco | free agent | Transaction
The Philadelphia Phillies declined a $5.5 million mutual option with 3B Placido Polanco and paid him a $1 million buyout. They declined options on RP Jose Contreras ($2.5 million) and 1B Ty Wigginton ($4 million) as well, paying them $500,000 buyouts. OF Juan Pierre and C Brian Schneider are free agents and are unlikely to re-sign.

3B | Mark Reynolds | Baltimore Orioles | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles will likely try to sign OF Nate McLouth, SP Joe Saunders and DH Jim Thome, among their players who can be free agents. They will hit the open market on Saturday, Nov. 3, if terms aren't reached. The team may elect to decline 3B Mark Reynolds' $11 million option and sign him for less, and RP Luis Ayala's $1 million option will likely be exercised.

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi called 3B Alex Rodriguez on the phone and had an hour-long conversation regarding the superstar's benching in the postseason, according to a source. "It was a great conversation," said the source, who had been briefed on the content of the call by one of the participants. "Joe could not have been more supportive and Alex could not have been more receptive." The team is unlikely to trade Rodriguez, and Girardi reinforced Rodriguez's value to the 2013 lineup.

The Cleveland Indians signed 18-year-old Japanese OF Takuya Tsuchida to a minor league contract. He's a left-handed hitter with speed that can play center field and second base.

OF | Melky Cabrera | San Francisco Giants | Free Agents, Fantasy
Nine San Francisco Giants players hit the free-agent market on Monday, Oct. 28, the first day players became free agents. SS Marco Scutaro, 2B Ryan Theriot, RP Jeremy Affeldt, RP Guillermo Mota, OF Angel Pagan, OF Xavier Nady, OF Melky Cabrera, SP Brad Penny and INF Freddy Sanchez are all eligible.

OF | Cody Ross | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington wants to re-sign DH David Ortiz and OF Cody Ross before they hit the open market next month. The Red Sox want to address first base, outfield, shortstop and starting pitching. The team expects its payroll to be way below last year's $175 million, but Cherington cautions this year's free-agent market is not strong and the club may elect to save money towards 2014.

The Los Angeles Dodgers declined their 2013 options on OF Juan Rivera ($4 million), RP Todd Coffey ($2.5 million) and C Matt Treanor ($950,000) Monday, Oct. 29, making them all free agents. The three buyouts will cost the team a total of $950,000.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Chad Billingsley | Los Angeles Dodgers | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (elbow) threw 35 to 40 pitches in a simulated game Monday, Oct. 29. He touched 94 mph and threw an assortment of pitches. He'll continue his normal offseason throwing, and it appears talk of Tommy John surgery has subsided.

SP | Anibal Sanchez | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez, C Gerald Laird, CL Jose Valverde and OF Delmon Young are eligible for free agency, and general manager Dave Dombrowski plans to target Sanchez and Laird for re-signing. Two other players, SS Jhonny Peralta and RP Octavio Dotel, have club options the team is likely to pick up.

SP | Dan Haren | free agent | Fantasy,
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim could explore the possibilities of trading SPs Dan Haren and Ervin Santana before their 2013 options are due in a couple of days, according to executives of other teams. However, it may be hard to trade either pitcher based on their disappointing seasons. The Angels aren't expected to exercise either option, which would make them free agents. Haren's option is worth $15.5 million and Santana's is worth $13 million.

The Minnesota Twins re-signed SP P.J. Walters to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Monday, Oct. 29. He is expected to compete to be a starting pitcher next year.

Minnesota Twins SP Nick Blackburn (elbow) had surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow late last week, and he's expected to be ready in time for spring training.

SP | Yu Darvish | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish has been invited to pitch for Japan in the World Baseball Classic next spring. Milwaukee Brewers OF Norichika Aoki, New York Yankees OF Ichiro Suzuki and SP Hiroki Kuroda and Seattle Mariners P Hisashi Iwakuma were also invited. Koji Yamamoto said he would like to have Rangers RP Koji Uehara as the club's closer.

SP | Scott Baker | free agent | Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Minnesota Twins declined to pick up SP Scott Baker's $9.25 million option for next season, making him a free agent. However, general manager Terry Ryan is interested in re-signing Baker to a new deal with only one spot in the starting rotation solidified as of now.

RP | Brandon Lyon | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
Toronto Blue Jays impending free-agent RPs Jason Frasor and Brandon Lyon could be re-signed by the team. "But the bullpen is an area of depth. It's going to be important that we have some relievers that have a chance to be here for a while. Both guys we'll strongly take a look at. I don't know where that's going to go," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. Lyon is seeking a multi-year deal but will likely have to take a pay cut from his $5.5 million salary.
