First Baseman

The chances of Boston Red Sox 1B James Loney returning next year are less than 50-50, according to a source. The team will not talk a contract with him before he's eligible to become a free agent. If anything, he'll be given a one-year deal to remain in a platoon spot at first base.

1B | Chad Tracy | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 1B Chad Tracy (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Thursday, Oct. 25, and he is expected to make a full recovery in advance of spring training.

1B | Luis A. Jimenez | Seattle Mariners | Transaction
Seattle Mariners INF Luis A. Jimenez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma Thursday, Oct. 25.

1B | Lance Berkman | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman is unlikely to return to the team next season. When general manager John Mozeliak was asked about the prospect of Berkman being back, he said, "it's hard to imagine finding a fit for him here."

Second Baseman

2B | Skip Schumaker | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 2B Skip Schumaker won't be an option at second base next season. "It's hard to imagine him getting a chance at a ton of playing time there with what we know we have," general manager John Mozeliak said, "and what we know we have coming." 2B Kolten Wong could be up in the bigs at some point next season.

2B | Brandon Phillips | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy
The Cincinnati Reds head into the offseason with finding a leadoff hitter as their biggest priority. The Reds used SS Zack Cozart, OF Drew Stubbs, 2B Brandon Phillips and OF Chris Heisey saw time at the leadoff spot this year. Their leadoff hitters hit only .208 with a .254 on-base percentage this season, which were both ranked last in the majors. SS Billy Hamilton could be an option, but he remains a year or more away from major league action.


SS | Paul Janish | Atlanta Braves | Injury
Atlanta Braves SS Paul Janish (shoulder) had surgery to repair a subluxation of his left shoulder and is expected to return in April.

Third Baseman

3B | Miguel Cabrera | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy
In perhaps a preview of what is expected to be a hotly contested battle for American League Most Valuable Player honors, Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera finished with 108 votes to win Sporting News Player of the Year honors. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Mike Trout, voted by the players as Sporting News' 2012 AL Rookie of the Year, finished second with 71 votes. No other player got more than five votes in what essentially was a two-man race.

3B | Kevin Youkilis | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
The status of Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy and 3B Kevin Youkilis are up in the air heading into the offseason. The White Sox can exercise a $22 million option on Peavy or buy him out for $4 million. If they decide to buy him out, they might try to bring him back at a lower rate, but he also figures to draw interest on the open market. The White Sox not expected to pick up 3B Kevin Youkilis' option after acquiring him from Boston in late June.

The Chicago Cubs outrighted INF Adrian Cardenas and Ps Miguel Socolovich, Jason Berken and Marcos Mateo to Triple-A Iowa Thursday, Oct. 25.

3B | Adrian Beltre | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre (abdominal) isn't expected to undergo surgery to fix an abdominal injury that bugged him at the end of this season. "Adrian is feeling well and not reporting any issues," assistant general manager Thad Levine said. "We have complete confidence in our medical staff, and they're not recommending surgery."

3B | Ryan Zimmerman | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) underwent successful arthroscopic shoulder surgery on his AC joint in his right shoulder Thursday, Oct. 25, according to general manager Mike Rizzo. Zimmerman is expected to be recovered in six weeks, and he should be ready for the start of spring training.

3B | Matt Carpenter | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told 3B Matt Carpenter to focus on playing some second base this winter. Matheny hopes to have Carpenter work with third base coach Jose Oquendo a few times this offseason to work on second base going into spring training. 2B Daniel Descalso is the current starter at the position.

3B | David Wright | New York Mets | Fantasy
Former New York Mets SS Jose Reyes said he thinks the team should find a way to sign 3B David Wright to a long-term contract extension this winter. "If they let him go, that's gonna be difficult to see the New York Mets without David Wright. I can't imagine that. You never know in this game what's gonna happen, but I wish all the best to David. He's a good friend of mine," Reyes said.

OF | Torii Hunter | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Fantasy
Although the return of OF Torii Hunter to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is not a done deal, the team refuted a report that it was unlikely to bring Hunter back. "Finding a way to fit Torii in is a challenge, but we have been open that we want him back," general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "We haven't closed the door on Torii and he hasn't closed the door on us."

The Milwaukee Brewers are considering the possibility of pursuing Texas Rangers impending free-agent OF Josh Hamilton this offseason.

OF | Rajai Davis | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
The Toronto Blue Jays are debating whether to pick up OF Rajai Davis' $3 million club option for next season, but if they do, Davis will unlikely return to find a starting role in the outfield. General manager Alex Anthopoulos believes Davis is better as an option off the bench. Davis could also platoon with OF Anthony Gose.

SP | Madison Bumgarner | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner is the first pitcher to begin his World Series career with 15-plus scoreless innings since Bruce Hurst of the Boston Red Sox in 1986. He also became the first Giant since Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson in 1905 to not allow a run in his first two career World Series starts.

Updating a previous report, the St. Louis Cardinals are keeping their fingers crossed this offseason that SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) won't need surgery. "The probability of (Garcia) having surgery is very remote or small at this point," general manager John Mozeliak said. "We'll go into spring training, hold our breath a little bit with him. Until you ramp it up and put yourself on the mound, we're not going to know for sure."

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said it's "probably unlikely" that the team re-signs SP Kyle Lohse this offseason. SPs Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Trevor Rosenthal and Shelby Miller will compete in spring training for a spot in the rotation.

Ps Guillermo Mota, George Kontos and Santiago Casilla will be manager Bruce Bochy's main options in the middle innings in Game 2 if they are needed.

RP | Mariano Rivera | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Yankees RP Mariano Rivera (knee) is having second thoughts about returning to pitch in 2013, according to sources. Rivera vowed that he would return after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in early May. Rivera will turn 43 years old next month as he works his way back from a devastating knee injury. It's unclear how the Yankees will approach Rivera's contract situation, either.
