Fantasy baseball players in the news

First Baseman

1B | Lance Berkman | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 1B Lance Berkman said the opportunities that are presented to him will determine if he plays next season or retires, not the health of his knees.

Second Baseman

2B | Marco Scutaro | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 2B Marco Scutaro was named NLCS MVP after hitting .500 and tying a record with 14 hits in the series. He'll receive a $75,000 bonus for winning the award.

Shortstop

SS | Eduardo Nunez | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman doesn't see SS Eduardo Nunez in an everyday role other than starting at shortstop, and that won't happen with SS Derek Jeter still around. "I look at Nunez and his value as a shortstop. I don't look at Nunez being valuable in an everyday role other than shortstop, and we have a shortstop. In terms of everyday status for Nuney, I don't see one as long as Derek Jeter is sitting there. ... All the calls of putting him in left field, I don't understand."

SS | Mike Aviles | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos told SS Mike Aviles he will at least have a spot on the team as the utility infielder next season, and there is a chance he'll have a shot to win the starting spot at second base.

SS | Cliff Pennington | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks SS Cliff Pennington could become the team's everyday shortstop, according to general manager Kevin Towers. Pennington also provides depth at second base behind 2B Aaron Hill. SSs Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald are other options at shortstop.

Third Baseman

3B | Mark Reynolds | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
The Baltimore Orioles have options on two players for 2013, A $1 million option ($100,000 buyout) on RP Luis Ayala and an $11 million option for 3B Mark Reynolds ($500,000 buyout). Ayala's option is team friendly, so it's likely it will be picked up. Reynolds' option is likely to be declined, but he still has one year remaining in arbitration, so if the Orioles buy out the option, he could still remain with the club. But they likely would have to pay him around $9 million or so in arbitration (he made $7.5 million in 2012 and a pay cut would be highly unlikely). So the Orioles could non-tender him a contract by Nov. 30 and try to renegotiate a new deal with him.

3B | Alex Rodriguez | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he doesn't expect 3B Alex Rodriguez to return to MVP form next season, and he said that Rodriguez is no longer a "superstar." "Is he a superstar at that position? No. But I think when anybody signed that (10-year, $275 million) contract (in 2007), expecting him to be at that level at that age would be unrealistic also," Cashman said.

Catcher

C | Yadier Molina | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
The St. Louis Cardinals were outscored 20-1 in the final three games of the NLCS after leading 3-1 to lose the series. C Yadier Molina had four hits in Game 7 of the NLCS, but everyone else went 1-for-21 with runners in scoring position the final three games.

C | J.P. Arencibia | Toronto Blue Jays | Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers, who are looking for extra catching help, could inquire about the availability of Toronto Blue Jays C J.P. Arencibia. Toronto has C Travis d'Arnaud waiting in the wings and C Jeff Mathis in reserve. C Mike Napoli will be a free agent this year and C Geovany Soto has one more year of arbitration after earning $4.3 million this year. The Blue Jays would likely be interested in SP Derek Holland in return, but Texas is unlikely to trade him straight up for Arencibia.

C | Bobby Wilson | Toronto Blue Jays | Transaction, Fantasy
The Toronto Blue Jays claimed C Bobby Wilson off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday, Oct. 22. Wilson is arbitration-eligible this winter, so he'll be due a raise from his 2012 salary of $487,500.

Outfielder

OF | Oscar Taveras | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras could be in center field by next season. The team is excited with his five-tool potential.

OF | Nate McLouth | Baltimore Orioles | Free Agents, Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles OF Endy Chavez, SS Bill Hall, 1B Nick Johnson, OF Nate McLouth, SP Joe Saunders, DH Jim Thome and SP Randy Wolf are all eligible for free agency following the season. The Orioles likely will make a run at McLouth, Saunders and perhaps Thome. The rest are likely gone.

OF | Matt Holliday | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (back) will return to the starting lineup for the deciding Game 7 of the National League Championship Series against the San Francisco Giants Monday, Oct. 22. He's hitting third and starting in left field.

OF | Jeremy Moore | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Transaction
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Jeremy Moore cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake Monday, Oct. 22.

OF | Coco Crisp | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy
Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane said he wants to keep OF Coco Crisp on roster despite trading for OF Chris B. Young. "I really like our outfield," Beane said. "Everybody knows how important this guy is to this team and also has the benefit of being a personal favorite of mine."

OF | Adam Eaton | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks OF Adam Eaton is expected to be the team's starting center fielder and leadoff hitter next season after the team dealt OF Chris B. Young to the Oakland Athletics. However, Eaton will be pushed by OFs Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock, who will compete for spots as well.

Starting Pitcher

SP | Mike Pelfrey | New York Mets | Fantasy
The New York Mets plan to non-tender SP Mike Pelfrey in the offseason. They could also non-tender OF Andres Torres.

SP | Brandon Beachy | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) began a playing catch from 30 feet. It's the first time he has thrown since having Tommy John surgery.

SP | CC Sabathia | New York Yankees | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (elbow) has been dealing with a bone spur in his left elbow since his days with the Cleveland Indians, according to a source, and it's likely that he'll need surgery to clean it out. Sabathia said that he is a little bit concerned.

SP | Jake Westbrook | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook (oblique) is likely to rejoin the starting rotation if the team makes the World Series.

Relief Pitcher

RP | Jose Valverde | Detroit Tigers | Fantasy,
Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde looked good against hitters in a scrimmage Sunday, Oct. 21, and pitching coach Jeff Jones said Valverde threw some good splitters while making mechanical tweaks. "I think he's more confident," Jones said.

RP | Sean Burnett | Washington Nationals | Fantasy,
Washington Nationals RP Sean Burnett is unlikely to pick up his option for the 2013 season worth $3.5 million, which would make him a free agent. He'll receive a buyout of $250,000 if he declines the option. Burnett is looking for more than a one-year deal, according to a baseball source, but his first priority is to remain in Washington.

RP | Heath Bell | Arizona Diamondbacks | Fantasy,
Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers envisions RP Heath Bell serving as the setup man to RP J.J. Putz next season. The Miami Marlins will be paying $1.5 million to Bell next year, $3.5 million in 2014 and the $3 million deferred signing bonus he will be owed.
