Should the St. Louis Cardinals reach the World Series, 1B Lance Berkman (knee) believes he will not be ready in time. He is making continued progress in rehabbing his surgically repaired right knee, but Berkman said he has a lot of ground to cover. "I'm not going to rule it out entirely, but I just don't want to put the team in a bad spot. I have to be pretty close to 100 percent or I wouldn't want to take a spot," Berkman said.

1B | Jason Giambi | Colorado Rockies | Fantasy
Colorado Rockies 1B Jason Giambi interviewed for the team's managerial vacancy Thursday, Oct. 18, according to a team source. Giambi said he would retire before becoming the club's next manager. The Rockies haven't revealed any of their external coaching candidates.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker (back) will not need surgery, and he continues to recover from a herniated disc in his back. However, he hasn't ramped up his activities to full speed yet. "By the middle of November, I should be back to 100 percent, which is kind of right on schedule," Walker said. "I think I'll probably be a little more cautious, with how much I do at the start of spring training. But I don't think anything is going to hold me back overall."


Shortstop

The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded OF Chris B. Young and cash considerations to the Oakland Athletics for SS Cliff Pennington and INF Yordy Cabrera.

Third Baseman

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told a New York radio show Sunday, Oct. 21, that 3B Alex Rodriguez will be in the team's plans for 2013, but Cashman will listen to offers. "It's not like I'm going to hang phones up on anybody who wants to make any overtures about anything," Cashman said. "You're talking about realistic stuff and unrealistic stuff. I don't think it's realistic at all for us to be moving forward with anything but Alex Rodriguez at third base."

The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to buy out the $4 million contract option for INF Ty Wigginton for the 2013 season. The team will pay $500,000 to cut ties with him and search for a younger, more defensively-sound utility player.

Scott Boras, the agent for New York Yankees RP Rafael Soriano, said there is a strong chance that his client will turn down a $14 million player option to accept a $1.5 million buyout and test free agency. If he rejects the option, the Yankees could make a qualifying offer between $13.3 million and $13.6 million and Soriano would have one week to accept the new amount or decide to become a free agent.
