Relief Pitcher

Detroit Tigers RP Phil Coke pitched two innings in relief of SP Anibal Sanchez Sunday, Oct. 14, as he picked up the save in a 3-0 win over the New York Yankees. The Tigers are up 2-0 in the American League Championship Series. Coke pitched in place of CL Jose Valverde, who was pulled out of the closer role by manager Jim Leyland.

The Philadelphia Phillies have said they need to plug third-base and outfield holes, but front-office staff has expressed a desire to add a veteran reliever to bridge the gap to CL Jonathan Papelbon. Washington Nationals RP Sean Burnett (elbow) is reportedly scheduled to undergo surgery next week to remove one or two small bone spurs in his left elbow. The procedure is considered minor and is unlikely to affect his offseason throwing program. Burnett had spent most of the second half of the season battling elbow discomfort due to the bone spurs. He and the Nationals hold a mutual option for next season worth $3.5 million, although he could opt to become a free agent.
