But sometimes you get into a situation like he was in Baltimore and your mind tells you, 'I've got to go.'"

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Albert Pujols is likely to see more time at designated hitter than first base in the final week of the season in order to preserve his health in case the team makes a postseason berth. "He is hanging in there," manager Mike Scioscia said of Pujols, who suffered a right calf injury in August. "He's had some leg issues for the last month and I think there is some compensation that is involved when you try to play with one part that is injured. Your body is going to compensate in other ways. It can affect you."

Cincinnati Reds OF Ryan Ludwick (groin) remains out of the lineup Thursday, Sept. 27, with tightness in his left groin. "I want to make sure I'm right before I go out there, because I don't want it to be wrong for the next month," Ludwick said. "I feel like I'm right around the corner. I still feel a little bit in there. I don't feel it's smart with the situation we're in to push it." He could return this weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates after taking full batting practice Wednesday. He's also been running and doing agility drills.

Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison went six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits, to become the Rangers' first 18-game winner since Kenny Rogers in 2004 with a 9-7 win over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, Sept. 27.

He walked two and struck out four. "I'm not pitching the way I want and I'm not getting the result I want, so that's not good," Nova said.

The Arizona Diamondbacks haven't beaten San Francisco Giants SP Barry Zito in his last six starts in the teams' series, and Zito is pushing to earn a start in the postseason. Zito (14-8) won his fourth straight start and sixth consecutive decision since a loss on Aug. 2. The 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland has his most wins since joining the Giants on a $126 million, seven-year contract before the 2007 season.

In six appearances since returning from the disabled list on Sept. 7, San Diego Padres RP Anthony Bass has given up four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 8 1/3 innings over six appearances.

The Chicago Cubs have some need at third base and in the bullpen entering the 2012-13 offseason, but the overwhelming need is in the rotation, where only SP Jeff Samardzija and, presumably, SP Matt Garza are assured of returning. "We're obviously going to be active in the free-agent market. I don't think there's any question about that,'' general manager Jed Hoyer said. The front office has meetings planned with manager Dale Sveum, coaches and players over the next week and into the days immediately following the season.

Minnesota Twins SP Samuel Deduno (eye) is dealing with left eye inflammation, but the cause of the issue is unknown. The team is unsure if he'll make another start this season. Deduno underwent an MRI exam which revealed the problem.

SP | R.A. Dickey | New York Mets | Fantasy,
New York Mets SP R.A. Dickey became the first knuckleball pitcher to win 20 games in more than three decades by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, Sept. 27, and he also tied a career high with 13 strikeouts in the process. Dickey hadn't won more than 11 games in any previous seasons. He gave up three runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings while walking two. He leads the National League in strikeouts with 222. Dickey became the first 20-game winner for the Mets since Frank Viola won 20 in 1990. He's the first knuckleballer to win 20 games since Joe Niekro in 1980.

The Seattle Mariners are being mindful of SP Felix Hernandez's workload as the season reaches its final week. Hernandez is expected to make his last start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday, Oct. 1, but he was pulled after only six innings Wednesday, Sept. 26, against the Angels. He is second in the majors in innings pitched this year with 226 2/3, and it's the seventh straight year he's had 30 or more starts in a season. Hernandez hasn't gone more than 103 pitches in his last four starts as the team looks to conserve him.

SP | Juan Nicasio | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy,
Colorado Rockies SP Juan Nicasio (knee) isn't wearing a brace on his left knee, and he has started throwing side sessions, which will continue in the instructional league. Nicasio plans to start five or six games in the Dominican Republic Winter League, too.

SP | Wily Peralta | Milwaukee Brewers | Injury, Fantasy,
Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta (biceps) left his start early against the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, Sept. 27, with biceps tightness, but the injury isn't expected to be serious. It's unlikely that the team will let him make another start this year.

Detroit Tigers SP Doug Fister set an American League record against the Kansas City Royals Thursday, Sept. 27, by striking out nine straight batters at one point. The major league record for most consecutive strikeouts in a game by a pitcher was set by Tom Seaver in 1970 with 10 straight strikeouts.

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland said he saw some improvement in his fastball during his bullpen session Thursday, Sept. 27, after an erratic fastball forced him to leave his last start after three innings against the Oakland Athletics Monday, Sept. 24. He gave up two home runs to bring his season total to 30 this year. Holland is scheduled to pitch next Saturday, Sept. 29, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Detroit Tigers skipper Jim Leyland is concerned about SP Rick Porcello drop in fastball velocity. Porcello was throwing only 88-90 mph in his last start Wednesday, Sept. 26, and he allowed four runs and seven hits to the Kansas City Royals. Porcello started the night hitting 92-94 mph on the radar gun, but it dropped significantly after that. "I just didn't like the way it was coming out," Leyland said. "I was concerned about it. He said something in the third inning and I didn't know about it at the time, but he said he had really no feel for it." Leyland said Porcello checked out fine health-wise, though.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland emphatically said SP Justin Verlander won't pitch on three days of rest to start the season finale Wednesday, Oct. 3. "He will pitch, if we're still playing, he'll either pitch the tiebreaker with the White Sox if there is one or he will pitch Game 1 (of the American League Division Series) if we get in," Leyland said. "But he will not pitch on three days' rest."
