Fancy fantasy football: Martellus Bennett
September 17, 2012 @ 18:30:29 PDT
In Week 3, Martellus Bennett should have plenty of opportunities to build on the first couple of games of what could be his breakthrough season.
Hakeem Nicks (10 catches, 199 yards, one touchdown) and Victor Cruz (11 receptions, 179 yards, one score) are coming off huge individual efforts. That pair will be on the Carolina Panthers' minds come Thursday night.
Specifically, they'll be on the minds of Chris Gamble and rookie Josh Norman, the Panthers' starting corners. It's a quality pair. They're just part of a unit that in recent years has made it a habit of clamping down on opposing wideouts.
Carolina hasn't been nearly as tough on tight ends, however. To a large degree, the opposing offense's scale of utilization of the position has determined the level of success of players at it against this defense.
The Panthers have very good linebackers and safeties, but their primary concerns Nicks and Cruz. The Cats won't be able to eliminate them, but secondary options should look attractive more often than usual to Eli Manning.
Three weeks ago, Bennett looked like a daring sleeper as a TE2. His nine haul-ins, 112 yards and two TDs on 16 targets have him well on his way. With his upcoming matchup, he looks like a sure thing as a No. 1 TE.
