Logan Forsythe, 2B/3B, San Diego Padres

The Friars have run with the scorching Forsythe for most of the last month as he's clubbed his way to a .344-3-12 line with three swipes and 15 plate crossings in 26 games (90 at-bats). The extra work he did in the offseason with Phil Plantier, who also helped Thursday DM entry Chase Headley, seems to have paid off, and there's more thump in his swing.

Pettitte back for more

A tad more MLB experience has aided Forsythe, as well. The 25-year-old already has five homers (none in 169 at-bats season), has cut his K's, ripped a liner on an eye-popping 30.3 percent of his connections, and is making more contact than he did in his 2011 stint. He's kept Jedd Gyorko at bay.

On the other hand, you can't ignore that gaping split disparity (.374/.452/.538 versus southpaws, .241/.307/.346 versus his matching handedness), and he still doesn't take an overwhelming number of free passes.

All in all, his improvements in those other offensive categories say he can at least keep this up through the rest of 2012, more so if you can manipulate his lineup placement when he's facing only left-handers. Even so, when things are clicking for a player at this time of year, it's difficult to sit him, especially while he's hitting near the top of an order for a team as hot as the Pads.

Andy Pettitte, SP, New York Yankees

The Bombers will get one of their elder statesmen back Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. He completed a simulated game of 60 to 65 pitches Wednesday following his rehab from a broken ankle.

Pettitte has transformed his game a bit in his brief 2012 stint. He's inducing more grounders than he has in recent years to offset his stale four-seam steam. He allows so few flies that his 15.9 HR/FB looks a bit off. His slider, per PITCHf/x, has once again become a prominent part of his arsenal to join his potent cutter and the two-seamer that gave him one last push in 2010 before retiring the next year.

In posting an age-defying 9.05 K/9 and 2.30 BB/9 in his nine-start sample on the season, the soft tosser has induced an 11.3 swinging-strike percentage, his highest of the years tracked on Fangraphs' site. Hitters are chasing at their highest rate (37.0 percent), as well, in the recorded window. If done properly, craftiness can outdo power.

There's always that risk when you play your home games at Yankee Stadium, but the rest of his profile has morphed into something so positive that the main concern you should have is whether his push-off ankle will remain strong the rest of the way.

The current schedule suggests Pettitte will face the Jays at home and on the road, along with Bronx dates with the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox. He's been a much better option at home than elsewhere in his nine-start sample - familiar environs for a familiar, helpful arm.

David Huff, SP, Cleveland Indians

He'll bump Jeanmar Gomez from the rotation. Huff's two-start schedule next week actually looks quite promising (hosting the Minnesota Twins, visiting the Kansas City Royals, along with another Monarchs contest the following week). Not a bad streamer, right? Well, both clubs have been decent versus left-handers this year, so it's not etched.

His control isn't stable enough to counteract his middling K/9, and though he's shown flashes in recent years (including last summer), there aren't many skills in which to put your faith. Plus, boring stuff often becomes inflated when pitching in relief.

Huff's six-inning bullpen sample on the year was enough to convince Manny Acta, but it shouldn't sway you into much interest. The matchups are alluring for this time of year. Unfortunately, the participant isn't.
