"He's ahead of schedule, so I don't want to say no. He's probably got an appointment in a couple weeks, and if the doctor says he's ready to go, then we'll have to rethink what we're doing," Roenicke said when asked about a return to the lineup in 2012.

Mayberry is hitting .297 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs against southpaws but is hitting only .224 with six home runs and 21 RBIs against right-handers in 76 more at-bats.

Updating previous items, St. Louis Cardinals SP Chris Carpenter (shoulder), who had surgery in July to alleviate the choking of nerves near his right shoulder, is building his pitch count with each rehab outing in an effort to rejoin the rotation before the end of this regular season. General manager John Mozeliak called that option "in play," and the Cardinals are open to using Carpenter as a starter down the stretch.

We know where he's at, and we know how many starts he has left." Diamond should have four starts left this year.

Britton used his slider as a put away pitch and kept his fastball down in the zone consistently.
