Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said 3B Evan Longoria (hamstring) will alternate between third base and designated hitter until the home stand is over. Longoria said he wants to play third base every day but will do what the team tells him.

Updating a previous report, Oakland Athletics 3B Brandon Inge (shoulder) will play at least three games for Triple-A Sacramento as part of his rehab assignment. The team could consider having Inge and 3B Josh Donaldson share time at third base when Inge returns.

He choked up slightly on the bat Wednesday, Aug. 22, but he'll have to deal with the issue for the rest of the season. "I feel great, I feel good, except I have a huge hole in my hand that hurts," Ethier said. "That's the frustrating part. It's just like Donnie said, you have to figure out a way to go up there and battle and keep having tough at-bats and find a way to contribute."

"So it is definitely something I could deal with."

St. Louis Cardinals OF Carlos Beltran (hand) went 1-for-3 Wednesday, Aug. 22, and said he feels great after having a cortisone injection in his left hand this week. "I feel great right now," Beltran said. "I'm just going to approach it day by day. I'm going to continue to come here and do the treatment and try to make it better. But (Wednesday) was a good day for me, because I wasn't really thinking about my hand. I was thinking about swinging the bat and trying to do my thing." He's hitting only .239 since the All-Star break.

He had a 2.49 ERA in nine starts with the team's rookie level affiliate, and he could spend the last few weeks pitching for Rochester. Minnesota also wants him to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Trevor Bauer struck out 12 in a complete-game win last week with Triple-A Reno, and scouting director Ray Montgomery thinks Bauer's struggles with the Diamondbacks in his four major league starts were largely attributed to the groin injury he was dealing with. Bauer hit the mid-90s last week, which he didn't do in the majors.
