More than half a year after acquiring him, the Boston Red Sox finally welcomed Andrew Bailey into regular season action. His eighth frame consisted of a 13-pitch, seven-strike effort with a walk and a strikeout. This followed a solid farm stretch (6 1/3 frames, one run, six hits, one walk, 10 K's).

Alfredo Aceves has Bobby Valentine's favor but could easily be yanked if Bailey proves to be his old self. Consider this another courtesy reminder that Bailey should be scooped up by saves-desperate folks, even if it takes him a few weeks to offer a chance at significant save contributions.

Fernando Rodney blew the Tampa Bay Rays' save chance last night and took the loss. He's hardly deserving of blame, though. He gave up a leadoff single, sure, but a Carlos Pena throwing error put runners on second and third, then came an RBI sac fly and a two-out bloop single. Neither of the two runs was earned.

That means Rodney has allowed just one tally of his own fault over his last 26 games. Wow. He became a whole new pitcher when he adjusted his positioning on the rubber to start on the first base side, and it amplified the location and effectiveness of his two-seam fastball and changeup. There's no reason to expect any jeopardy in his job for the rest of the season.
