Terrell Owens makes his return to the NFL ... maybe
August 6, 2012 @ 18:25:08 PDT
Just how much is the question....
The answer: Not enough to matter for fantasy owners. While he has Hall of Fame credentials, the situation in Seattle doesn't bode well for fostering a productive season for the 16-year vet. Pete Carroll's coaching style will probably lead to an Owens outburst or 10, and expected ineptitude at quarterback will only add fuel to the inferno.
Assuming Owens wins a starting role and plays 16 games, his ceiling is about 45 receptions, 575 yards and five or six scores. He could have a few good games, but it will be tough to predict when, and it may take TO a good portion of the season before he is where he needs to be.
Seattle has a lot of weapons to factor in - it will be interesting to see if Owens even makes the final roster.
A combination of Braylon Edwards, Sidney Rice, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Deon Butler, Ben Obomanu, Kris Durham, Marshawn Lynch, Kellen Winslow and Zach Miller will vie for touches once the 53-man squad is settled.
At the earliest, Owens is a late-round gamble for desperate owners. I wouldn't draft him in standard-depth leagues (16 rostered players). There simply isn't enough upside to warrant burning a pick on him. Unfortunately, someone will overdraft him based on name value alone. Don't be that owner!
