Blake Beavan, SP, Seattle Mariners

Harvey soon?

Multiple sources speculate that the M's will recall Beavan, 23, to make a start early next week. The club needs him to act as fifth starter for only one or two appearances because Erasmo Ramirez (strain in right elbow) may be ready to go before too long.

The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Beavan was just bad (5.92 ERA, 4.33 K/9, 1.59 BB/9) in 62 1/3 innings earlier this season with the big club. Since his demotion to Triple-A Tacoma, the right-hander seems to have turned things around, at least as far as results (2.61 ERA, 3.55 K/9, 2.13 BB/9 in 38 frames) are concerned.

Saber measures and other indicators don't suggest a vast difference between the way Beavan pitched before and after Seattle optioned him. He attributes his 2012 farm success to a change in the way he's attacked hitters, however.

In the lead-up to the trade deadline, the Mariners are shopping pieces, and a starter like Jason Vargas may not be around come August. Such a move would recreate an opening in the parent club's rotation, meaning that Beavan could spend much of the second half in the majors.

The question: How much better will he be this time around? More than likely, better than he was in his first 2012 MLB stint. But his upside seems limited to something like the marks that he put up in his first big-league action, last season (4.27 ERA, 3.90 K/9, 1.39 BB/9 in 97 stanzas). He could be a quality matchup play, though.

Jack Wilson, SS, Atlanta Braves

Andrelton Simmons (non-displaced fracture of fifth metacarpal in right hand) will probably be out for at least six weeks. Although there was some expectation that the Bravos would recall Tyler Pastornicky to fill in for the exciting prospect, it seems that they're opting for the veteran backup.

Atlanta will keep its ears open for a short-term upgrade via trade, but they won't give up much to get one. A move is possible but seems unlikely.

Wilson is still capable of playing replacement-level defense, but he's batted .174 in 69 at-bats this season and seems to offer nothing but downside for roto purposes.

The 34-year-old is a .265 career hitter and batted .249 and .243 in each of the last two campaigns, though. Regular playing time will give him the opportunity to find a rhythm.

Wilson's far from exciting, but he may provide fantasy owners with double-digit runs and a steal or two that could make a difference at the end of the season. If you have nothing going for you at the MI spot, it probably won't hurt to give him a shot.

Miguel Batista, P, New York Mets

Dillon Gee (surgery to repair artery in right shoulder) will probably miss the rest of the season, so the Metropolitans seem inclined to toss Batista back in the rotation for a spell.

Combined in four starts (18 innings) this season, the long-time veteran posted a 4.00 ERA, 5.00 K/9, 3.50 BB/9). The San Francisco Giants dismantled him in a spot start in April, but in a three-start stretch (14 1/3 stanzas) in June, he was quite effective (13 hits, four runs, two earned runs, four walks, eight strikeouts).

Regardless, roto players know that Batista isn't an exciting option. His lifetime ERA as a starter (4.45) supports that notion.

Before Gee's injury, the Mets were opposed to a Matt Harvey promotion, but club is beginning to alter its stance, according to Terry Collins. Even if Batista takes the fifth starter's turn, he probably won't stick there. Harvey has more upside for fantasy owners, anyway.
