It was Glen Perkins' turn to try a Minnesota Twins save Monday. It was bumpy, but he got it done despite giving up singles to Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. Since two of the three due hitters stand in the left side of the box, it was a Perkins moment.

With Matt Capps (shoulder inflammation) still working on his rehab, Perkins and right-hander Jared Burton will split chances. And of course, they're worth holding at least until Capps' Aug. 1 team is determined.

Aroldis Chapman didn't do a somersault after his scoreless Monday inning in non-save work, but he fanned two to work around a hit. The Cincinnati Reds' stopper hopes to shake off his woes in ways other than doing on-field tumbles.

Last night, his fastball hit 100.1 mph on average, per PITCHf/x, its highest mean all season. The other most noticeable trend from his last two games has been the slower pace in which he has worked. Maybe the more breaths he takes and the more hitters have to think about his wicked stuff, the better. Let's watch this trend to see if anything comes from it.

So is it J/K-Rod for the New York Mets? They're interested in bringing back Francisco Rodriguez, who's a free agent after this season, per Newsday's Ken Davidoff. It's a bit of a curveball, considering Rodriguez's tumultuous relationship with the organization, but it makes baseball sense. Yesterday, Nick addressed the rumblings of the Metropolitans prowling for an RP.

Rodriguez's velocity is up from 2011, and Davidoff thinks the righty's $8 million salary could lower the Milwaukee Brewers' asking price. Though he's declined notably in recent years, especially in the K column, K-Rod's closer resume trumps Frank Francisco's, and the latter would probably set up in this arrangement. Owners of Frank Squared and Bobby Parnell should line up contingency plans.

The Brew Crew's John Axford notched his 14th save of the season last night in an uncharacteristic 1-2-3 frame. Who'd be the understudy if K-Rod is dealt? Probably either Jose Veras or Kameron Loe, for those digging. Veras has been the chief seventh-inning setup man, so he'd be the lean, but plenty can change by the time we'd even need to address that situation.
