Dillon Gee, SP, New York Mets

This is why you look at splits. Gee's 4.27 seasonal ERA hides some attractive skills, his 8.24 K/9, 2.48 BB/9 and 52.5 grounder percentage included. Over his last six starts, he boasts a 2.85 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with 40 K's in 41 frames. In each outing, he went at least six stanzas and allowed no more than three earned runs.

He's shown a touch of a velocity increase since last year, and the improved use of his slider/cutter (label depends on the analysis system) has produced more empty swings. It seems to have better downward movement this year compared to 2011, as well.

A 1.19 HR/9 means a lot of missed locations, however, considering how few flies he yields. Considering he still mostly sits in the low 90s, he wasn't considered a K asset until this season. But golly Gee, it's a true growth year for the 26-year-old that doesn't deserve a cold shoulder; he's still widely available.

Tyler Moore, 1B/OF, Washington Nationals

He'll see platoon work versus southpaws in left field with Xavier Nady (wrist) on the DL for about a month. Also, Adam LaRoche's crash back to earth sustains the need for a 1B alternative versus left-handed arms. Moore has gone 10-for-23 in June (.435/.552/.783) with a two-tater game and five RBIs. Maybe the 25-year-old's opponents will be "not just lefties," per Davey Johnson, who's appearing to trust Moore ... more.

His 6-foot-2, 215-pound build produces explosiveness in a compact swing. The righty raker hit 31 homers in both 2010 (Potomac, Carolina League) and 2011 (Harrisburg, Eastern League) before clubbing nine in 100 at-bats for Triple-A Syracuse this season. His BB/K leaves much to be desired, but it has improved of late.

Playing time post-break will likely depend on Jayson Werth's rehab from a fractured left wrist (targeted late July return), but Moore could be a handy plug-in for the interim.

Daniel Descalso, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis has started the 25-year-old at the keystone in seven of their last eight games. On Sunday, they even started the lefty-hitting stick against a southpaw, which had been the role of Tyler Greene for much of the year.

The power is quite David Ecksteinian, but Double D holds some attractive BA attributes, including a steady diet of liners and ground balls and a noteworthy walk rate increase. Before an 0-for-4 Monday, he had a seven-game hit streak in which he went 8-for-22 with two RBIs.

Unfortunately, his contact rate falls below average, and he hits at the bottom of the order, meaning playing time is his biggest asset.
