Ryan Dempster heads to DL

While it's not considered very serious, the right lat tightness that has plagued Dempster landed him on the disabled list Monday. The Cubbies are thankful that it wasn't a strain, which would have been more of an issue and would have kept Dempster from coming back to audition for interested parties before the trade deadline.

Lat ailments can be tricky and can linger, but Chicago isn't very worried. The fact that he pitched 22 straight scoreless innings while dealing with the soreness is a good sign. Sit tight in all formats.

His stellar 2.11 ERA has been bolstered by a fortunate strand rate (83.1 percent) and low BAPIP (.235) when compared to his career marks in these indicators. The 35-year-old has improved his command, though, and his value will only be boosted if he is traded to a contender - which seems to be a good bet at this point in the Cubs' lost season.

Randy Wells will make the start against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday. He put up a 4.50 ERA with 11 K's and 16 walks in 22 innings (two starts) earlier this year. At Triple-A Iowa, he sported a 7.71 ERA with 22 punchouts in six starts.

None of Wells' skills stand out at the major league level, so he doesn't deserve much of an investment, if any. Dempster's expected short stay on the DL further limits Wells' fleeting usefulness.

Jacob Turner to audition for rotation spot

Turner will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to make his season debut versus the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday. He'll be replacing Drew Smyly (blister on finger) in the rotation after Smyly landed on the disabled list last week.

GM Dave Dombrowski wants to see what Turner can do, and it sounds like he'll be given a chance to stick if he pitches well enough. Turner, the Tigers' top pitching prospect, struggled in three starts in his first big league action in 2011, going 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in 12 2/3 frames. At Toledo over seven starts, he was 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA.

Turner hasn't been very dominant in the upper farm levels in small sample sizes, and he's been working his way back from shoulder tendonitis back in spring training. Toledo skipper Phil Nevin is impressed with Turner's progress as a pitcher and notes his arm strength is back. There are more growing pains to experience, but one would think he won't be as disappointing as his initial look last year.

Royals place Chris Getz on DL

Kansas City put Getz back on the disabled list following the lateral strain in his lower left leg Sunday. Getz had just returned from the DL last Tuesday after sitting out with a left rib cage contusion. He was hitting .290 with eight RBIs in 36 games.

Yuniesky Betancourt was tabbed to platoon at the keystone with Getz, so he would be in line to benefit from a playing time standpoint. However, Johnny Giavotella was scratched from the Triple-A Omaha lineup when Getz was initially injured Sunday, so KC could be prepping to bring him back up.

If Giavotella is recalled, he'd be the better option, but he's still a work-in-progress at the plate.
