Mound meetings

Sergio Romo felt a "twinge," per Andrew Baggarly, in his left knee when he started his bullpen stretching in the seventh inning Wednesday. The San Francisco Giants' right-hander was fitted for and given a brace, a twin for the protection on his already balky right bender. He promptly pitched that night's ninth, recording two K's in a scoreless frame for his third save of the year and of the last week.

Lidge back in the picture?

Jeremy Affeldt wasn't available due to his busy workload, and Santiago Casilla (knee) was unavailable barring an emergency. Last night's affair almost qualified.

Bruce Bochy hopes Casilla and Romo will be available Thursday. The former will probably need a small tune-up before he's entrusted in save spots, but when all 'pen options are available, he still holds the baton, with Romo as the top backup. Even after Casilla proves healthy and up to closing, it wouldn't hurt to retain Romo, who's useful even without save employment.

Brad Lidge was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday after a 1-2-3 frame with two K's Wednesday at high Single-A Potomac. Tyler Clippard, who put a bow on Wednesday's Washington Nationals triumph, stands in front of this saves line, but Lidge should sneak in at least a few opportunities before Drew Storen (elbow) comes back sometime around the All-Star break. Closer chasers should give Lidge a stab.

Heck, maybe Davey Johnson moves Clippard back to strict setup duty considering how much he valued the righty there earlier this year. Doubt it, though.

Frank Francisco blew a save Tuesday. He entered in the bottom of the eighth with one out and a runner on second and gave up a groundout and a single that plated the tying run. The New York Mets lost in 12. As for Frank Frank, he had converted his previous six opportunities, so he's built up some security. Unless he goes on another slump stretch, he's in little danger.

Huston Street's first MLB action in about a month wasn't pretty: With two outs in the top of the ninth Tuesday, he allowed a double, a walk and a single before escaping the bases-loaded spot by inducing a groundout. The San Diego Padres' stopper should get back in the swing soon; he was having a fine campaign before hitting the sidelines.

On Tuesday, Alfredo Aceves gave up two runs on a walk and three singles in the 10th inning - his second of the night - to absorb the Boston Red Sox's loss. This came after he threw a perfect ninth with two groundouts and a swinging K. Though he has had a few blowups this year - especially in April - he'll need to falter much more than that - in save situations, mind you - to lose grip on the interim gig until Andrew Bailey (thumb) resurfaces.
