The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Monday, May 7, that Kenley Jansen is their closer. Add the dominant Jansen in all formats.
Been a battle for Guerra
The deposed Javy Guerra can be kept on deep mixed benches if there aren't better options for save speculation available, but he shouldn't be in your lineup considering his recent rough performance. It seems like since he was hit in the jaw with a line drive and suffered related lower-body injuries nearly two weeks ago, his confidence has been shaken.
The right-hander pitched above his skills last year considering he didn't strike out many batters. But he's inducing more empty hacks, his K rate has grown by leaps and bounds, and his fastball still touches the mid-90s. He's missing his spots, though, and paying for it, as shown in his opponents' 40 percent line-drive rate.
In other words, his growth areas have been buried beneath his recent plagued stretch. In fact, while Jansen was trying to sort through his own mechanical issues, Guerra ran off five straight conversions.
While Jansen has the stuff to take this gig and run with it, there's a chance Guerra could fall back into the role given how Don Mattingly took to him last year. It took an utter long-term meltdown to make him switch this year, and all it might take is a few adjustments. He's not a bad stash until you find a better saves source or develop a more important need.
