2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Case Keenum, QB, Houston

by Cory J. Bonini on April 25, 2012 @ 15:01:33 PDT

Houston quarterback Case Keenum set numerous NCAA records, but that may not translate to a high placement in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Coming from a spread offense that heavily emphasizes the passing game, Keenum threw for at least 5,000 yards in all three of his healthy seasons as a starter, and he tossed at least 44 touchdown passes in each of those years. Keenum's senior season was one for the ages, as he completed 71.0 percent of his throws for 5,631 yards and threw 48 touchdown strikes to just five interceptions.

Case Keenum, QB, Houston
Too many negatives

  • Very accurate on underneath throws
  • Insane level of production in college
  • Smart with the football
  • Undisputed leader of the team and master of their offense
  • Great touch on his passes
  • Understands how to place the ball where his receivers can get the most from the play after the catch
  • Experienced making pre-snap reads
  • Excellent intangibles (intelligent, good character, tough, son of a coach)

  • Small frame at 6-foot 5/8, 208 pounds
  • Mild injury concern because of his size (suffered torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2010)
  • Inflated production because of the system
  • Struggled under pressure
  • Lacks overall arm strength and has an elongated motion when throwing deep
  • Needs to learn how to play from under center and make progressions
  • Below-average athleticism

Expected draft placement

Keenum is a major project at the next level and may be lucky to be drafted at all. His size, lack of athleticism, inflated production and mechanical flaws will hold him back. Expect someone to take a shot on him in the seventh round, but do not be surprised if he is an undrafted free-agent signing.
