What are the odds that you still own the relief pitchers you rostered in your fantasy baseball draft? KFFL.com's Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat series gives you no-nonsense ratings of performances, injuries and managerial decisions in MLB bullpens. Get your arm loose: Let's find fantasy baseball players in your rotisserie or head-to-head baseball league who'll get saves.
With Joel Hanrahan (strained hamstring) out again Wednesday, Juan Cruz recorded his second save in as many days. This might keep him out of a Pittsburgh Pirates chance today on the basis of workload, but he's clearly the main option if Hanrahan has to ride the pine for a bit. Scoop him up if you're grasping for saves.
Clear Hanny fill-in
- As if Brad Lidge weren't already causing his fantasy baseball owners imbalance: He suffers from vertigo, which was affecting him to a greater length recently, including his rough Tuesday save in which he tap-danced around a tight situation. Henry Rodriguez, Lidge's wrap-up partner with Drew Storen (elbow) sidelined, stepped in Wednesday and did the deed with a perfect frame.
Though Lidge has been receiving treatment and could get by if it's managed properly, this could lead to increased chances for the rising H-Rod.
- As long as Matt Capps can preserve Minnesota Twins wins, his job is stable. The one-out ninth-inning solo homer he gave up with a two-run lead Wednesday won't knock him off his pedestal anytime soon; he recorded the save, after all. Of course, the warning-track fly that nearly tied the game with two outs reminds you of how risky his accompanying peripherals are to those closing opps.
- The demotion of Mark Melancon and Alfredo Aceves' trio of perfect one-inning outings extends the latter's rope as the replacement Boston Red Sox stopper.
- Brian Wilson will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday. Single-year owners who've held on to the San Francisco Giants' stopper can cut him loose.
