2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest

by Cory J. Bonini on April 18, 2012 @ 15:39:49 PDT

Wake Forest wideout Chris Givens broke out in a big way in 2011, which helped him make his decision as an early entrant for the 2012 NFL Draft

The junior caught 83 passes for 1,330 yards and scored nine times in 2011. He finished his three-year collegiate career with 23 total touchdowns.

Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest
Speed to burn

  • Very good speed (4.41-second 40-yard dash)
  • Big-play threat
  • Quick feet in the open field and as a route runner
  • Experienced lining up all over the field
  • Very consistent - at least four receptions in every game in 2011
  • Polished route runner
  • Explodes out of his cuts
  • Excellent field awareness
  • Intelligent player - hard worker, well-liked teammate
  • Experience out of the backfield as a running back (two rushing scores in 2010); had at least 14 carries in each of his three NCAA seasons

  • Injury concerns - tore each anterior cruciate ligament in high school
  • Exceptionally small hands (8 1/4 inches) - allows too many passes into his body, resulting in a lot of drops
  • Seems to hear footsteps over the middle of the field - leads to a lot of alligator-armed attempts
  • Easily jammed at the line of scrimmage by larger cornerbacks
  • One-year wonder?
  • Smallish frame (5-foot-11 1/8, 198 pounds)
  • Could have benefited from spending another year in college

Expected draft placement

Givens is a late second-round grade, but he'll likely be left out of Round 2 given the way the draft will probably fall. He shouldn't slide past the late third and has a style of play that will fit virtually any team in the league.
