Central Florida cornerback Josh Robinson has flown up draft boards recently and could be an early selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

The junior recorded 10 interceptions and 36 passes defensed in 38 collegiate games.

Josh Robinson, CB, Central Florida
Soaring up draft boards

  • Good zone defender
  • Amazing straight-line speed (4.33-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine)
  • Breaks quickly on the ball
  • Very competitive
  • Special teams return experience
  • Durable
  • Tends to play to the level of elite competition
  • Freakish athleticism (38 1/2-inch vertical, 11-foot-1 broad jump)
  • Willing tackler - plays a respectable role in run support
  • Experienced - played in 38 straight games at Central Florida
  • Tracks the ball well downfield
  • Diagnoses the play well and reacts quickly

  • Somewhat undersized (5-foot-10 1/8, 199 pounds) and could struggle against large receivers
  • May be benefiting too much from strong workouts
  • Doesn't automatically project as an outside cornerback in the NFL
  • Tends to be too high in his backpedal
  • Had ball security issues as a return specialist
  • Just OK in man coverage
  • Questionable footwork
  • Not particularly instinctual
  • Only average ball skills - gets his hands on a lot of passes but fails to secure easy interceptions

Expected draft placement

Robinson, once viewed as a final-day prospect, has risen to a second-round grade on most boards. While we are a bit skeptical of Robinson's meteoric rise, he should develop into a sound player with the right coaching. Expect a late second- or early third-round placement for him in the draft.
