by Cory J. Bonini on April 9, 2012 @ 11:47:42 PDT

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler is an intriguing prospect for teams in the 2012 NFL Draft looking to take a chance on a project passer with a bright future.

The raw, inexperienced former Sun Devil passed for 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns in his lone season as a starter in 2011. Osweiler completed 63.2 percent of his throws on the year and added three touchdowns on the ground.

Patience could be rewarded

  • Size (6-foot-6 7/8, 242 pounds)
  • Big-time arm strength - tremendous zip on intermediate and underneath throws
  • Productive in lone year as a starter
  • Mobile for his size - considered playing basketball for Gonzaga
  • Quality footwork
  • Quick release
  • Known for his work ethic and leadership skills
  • Immeasurable upside
  • Has shown the ability to throw on the run

Maybe too tall?

  • Limited experience as a starter - unrefined and should have returned for his senior year
  • Tends to throw off his back foot when facing pressure
  • Coming from a spread offense that primarily relied on taking snaps from shotgun
  • Forces too many passes and struggles to give his receivers a chance to get to the ball
  • Three-quarters release - needs to take better advantage of his height
  • Inexperienced with pre-snap reeds

Expected draft placement

Osweiler is a raw project but has the physical tools to excel at the next level, with the proper coaching. Expect a team to take a chance on him in the neighborhood of the third or fourth rounds. It is possible that he goes higher, but he may even be a bit of a reach in the third round.

Teams that could show interest in him include the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.
