The deal also includes two club options that could push the total value to $46 million. In 2011, he held left-handed hitters to a .155 (17-for-110) average, which was the second lowest mark for relievers with a minimum of 100 at-bats and the lowest single-season mark in Rays history.

Peralta's offspeed pitch, a split-fingered fastball, has been the biggest reason for his ability to retire lefties with great success. He is throwing it to lefties 30 percent of the time since 2010, and those hitters swung and missed on more than 25 percent of those pitches. Lefties swung and missed on 35 percent of their swings on his splitters. Peralta avoided the inside corner of the plate with his splitters against left-handers, too.
