"Well, I don't know if it has eliminated two guys," Thornton said. "But it's clear at least two are out of the running." Reed threw a scoreless seventh inning, and Thornton tossed a scoreless eighth. RPs Jesse Crain and Hector Santiago were not used, although Santiago received the call to start loosening in case the White Sox rallied to take the lead. However, manager Robin Ventura would not say if Santiago would be the team's closer, and he even mentioned RPs Nate Jones or Will Ohman could have gotten the call, too.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) will wear a soft cast for the next 10-14 days, and then he will wear a brace after that. He isn't sure of a timetable for when he will resume throwing, but he's optimistic he will pitch again this season. "The doctor said the surgery went well and we didn't have to reconstruct anything, it was the ligament that was already in there, so that's a good sign," Bailey said.
