2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Ben Jones, C, Georgia

by Cory J. Bonini on March 29, 2012 @ 17:00:37 PDT

Georgia Bulldogs center Ben Jones relies on his ability to understand defenses rather than his size or power. His intangibles should take him a long way in the 2012 NFL Draft

Ben Jones, C, Georgia
Undersized but heady

Strengths

  • Intelligent - makes all of the line calls
  • Experienced - four-year starter (48 games)
  • Understands leverage and takes smart angles
  • Mirrors defenders well
  • Pro-style offense experience
  • Great technique and fundamentals
  • Team leader
  • Durable
  • Quality shotgun snapper
  • Good initial quickness, even if it isn't necessarily explosive

Weaknesses

  • Lacks ideal size (6-foot-2 5/8, 303 pounds) and strength
  • Not particularly athletic
  • May struggle pulling (little experience)
  • Not very fluid in space
  • Displays little explosion
  • Just OK as a run blocker

Expected draft placement

Jones' lack of size and limited athletic ability may keep him from being drafted any higher than the early third round. He could sneak into the second if a team likes his experience and durability, but Jones doesn't profile as an immediate starter at the next level.
