"I feel like I'll be fine," LaRoche said. "I would like to (play) here, just to be on first base, I get to work around the bag defensively. Worst-case, if it doesn't happen, as long as I continue to get at-bats (in minor league games) I'll be ready."

Two of his four hits have been home runs. "The rumors of him starting at Triple-A have never come from the Pirates," general manager Neal Huntington said. "It's been outside speculation. It's not what we've thought (of doing). We asked him to do some things coming into spring training and he's done those. He's going through a tough stretch right now."

Alvarez said it's taking him some time to get used to a toe tap that he added to his swing as a timing mechanism. "He uses it to gather himself, get himself in a position where he feels athletic," manager Clint Hurdle said. "When that front foot hits the ground, he needs to be in a good foundation, with his hands in a strong position, to get to the ball and stay through it."

3B | Kevin Youkilis | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy
Boston Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis (back) said his stiff back isn't a cause for concern, and he's scheduled to receive some minor league at-bats Monday, March 26. He'll make $250,000 for 95 days on the roster and $250,000 for every 15 days up to 165. His 2013 option has been reduced from $9 million to $6 million. The team is still unsure when Hernandez will pitch for them again, if ever.

"I have to get it strong, and when I get it strong, I'll be ready to come back."

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Johan Santana (shoulder) let the first four hitters he faced reach base Monday, March 26, issuing three walks. His fastball velocity lagged in the first inning, but he picked up his velocity later in the outing and allowed to runs and four hits while walking four, hitting a batter and striking out five in five frames. He threw 55 of his 88 pitches for strikes. "I was struggling locating my fastballs," Santana said. "I threw two-seamers. And, then, by the time I threw my breaking ball, I wasn't able to throw strikes. But then I made some adjustments and I started hitting the inside corner and I was better after that. ... It was just one of those days where things take a little longer. That's all it was." His velocity returned to 88-89 mph in the third inning.
