2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State

by Cory J. Bonini on March 19, 2012 @ 17:42:38 PDT

Arizona State inside linebacker Vontaze Burfict is a enigmatic character of sorts, as he has probably as many fans as critics. As they say, all it takes is one team to like him in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State
Troubling concerns abound

  • Stout frame (6-foot-1 3/8, 248 pounds)
  • Productive player
  • Displays pre-snap awareness
  • Sifts through traffic to make the play
  • Lateral agility
  • Able to hang with tight ends in man coverage
  • Explosive tackler
  • Impressive reaction time
  • Very aggressive and plays with a mean streak that few players possess
  • Versatile - capable of playing in multiple systems
  • Reasonable pass-rushing skills despite a low sack total

  • One of the most undisciplined players to ever enter the draft
  • Very questionable decision-making skills
  • Attitude and maturity concerns
  • Lack of conditioning
  • Slow top-end speed
  • Limited technique moves and rarely engages with his hands
  • Seems to rather hit than tackle
  • Lacks instincts - relies too much on what he sees and is often fooled by misdirections or play-fakes

Expected draft placement

Burfict has hurt his draft stock through terrible workouts and reportedly poor interview sessions with teams. His stock ranges anywhere from the fourth round to being an undrafted free agent. Expect him to go somewhere around the sixth round.
