2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Doug Martin, RB, Boise State

by Cory J. Bonini on March 12, 2012 @ 17:22:14 PDT

Boise State running back Doug Martin is an above-average blue collar prospect that can be considered a bit of a sleeper for whichever team takes him in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Martin finished the 2011 season with 263 carries, 1,299 rushing yards, 16 ground scores, 28 grabs, 255 receiving yards and two more touchdowns through the air.

Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
Solid mid-tier RB choice

Strengths

  • Nose for the end zone (47 offensive touchdowns in last three years)
  • Productive the last two years (at least 1,200 rushing yards each season)
  • Competent receiver out of the backfield
  • Strong inside runner - low pad level, churning legs
  • Good balance - effective spin move
  • Hard worker
  • Compact, muscular build (5-foot-9 1/4, 223 pounds)
  • Quick feet - shifty runner with a little wiggle
  • Polished, well-rounded prospect
  • Protects the ball well

Weaknesses

  • Lacks top-end speed to be a big-play threat
  • Inexperienced pass protector and lacks ideal lower-body strength to anchor as a blocker
  • Questionable patience when waiting for blocks to develop
  • Limited ceiling at the next level

Expected draft placement

In the right offense, Martin has the potential to be an every-down back. He may have a hard time finding that role with the way the NFL has shifted its philosophy toward ball carries in recent years.

Martin should be looked at in the late second or early third rounds. Teams that could use a back of his style include the Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams.
