2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Orson Charles, TE, Georgia

by Cory J. Bonini on March 9, 2012 @ 17:19:44 PDT

Georgia junior tight end Orson Charles is a dynamic pass-catching playmaker with big-time potential at the next level, but just where will he go in the 2012 NFL Draft?

In 2011, Charles snared 45 passes for 574 yards and scored five times. He started the season in strong fashion, scoring four times in the team's first five outings.

Orson Charles, TE, Georgia
Able to overcome concerns?

  • Athleticism
  • Strength (35 reps on the bench press)
  • Willing blocker that takes pride in this area of his game
  • Quick initial burst off the line
  • Smooth route runner that displays technique of a wide receiver, his former position
  • Has a second gear that allows him to evade defenders
  • Big-play ability
  • Versatility - has lined up at tight end, H-back and in the slot
  • Strong hands, with good coordination and body control
  • Good hand moves to get a clean release
  • Team captain in 2011
  • Determined - dedicated to improving

  • Size (6-foot-2 1/2, 251 pounds) - lacks ideal height and may be pigeonholed as a hybrid tight end
  • Arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2012
  • Ran 4.75- and 4.90-second 40-yard dash at Georgia's Pro Day (into strong winds) - much faster game speed, though
  • Occasionally drops easy catches and regularly struggles tracking the ball over his shoulders
  • Ball-security concerns

Expected draft placement

Charles has a special skill set that is becoming coveted by more teams in the NFL. He is a bit of a 'tweener, whose play is reminiscent of New England's Aaron Hernandez.

Expect the former Bulldog to come off the board no earlier than the late first round (perhaps the New York Giants at No. 32), but Charles is not likely to slide past the late second round. He could go to any one of a number of teams atop the early second round: (Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins).
