Fantasy baseball player profiles - SS

KFFL.com's fantasy baseball rankings are based on our fantasy baseball projections, but a ranking doesn't always reflect a player's optimal position in fantasy baseball drafts. Use these player profiles in conjunction with our free Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide to get the whole story.

Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies | Age: 27 Bat: R Ht: 6-3 Wt: 205 Elig: SS

New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter
Captain still useful

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
4967815028935.302.379.538.917

As long as you prepare for a few injuries from him, Tulowitzki is as close to money in the bank as you'll get from the SS position. Contact skills, maturing BB/K facilitate elite BA. Power over last 3 years signals early arrival of prime years. Coors Field will continue aiding that. COL aggressive enough that he'll continue contributing SB, even if not in the double digits. He's a seasoned 27-year-old that probably doesn't have much ceiling left to tap, but from the 6, it's an elite, peaking skill set that no one can match. -TH

Jose Reyes, Miami Marlins | Age: 28 Bat: B Ht: 6-1 Wt: 200 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
56684169145332.299.355.445.800

Include a DL stint or two in Reyes' price. Even with the likelihood of sideline time, he's probably worth it. He showed few ill effects from another hamstring woe when he resurfaced late in the year. His BA will drop significantly (.353 BABIP) but it looks like he could be trading the power upside he showed more years ago for sounder contact. Of course, more pop could come naturally anywa - he'll be 29 in June - so a return to 12-13 homers isn't unfounded. Even with his medical history, he remains one of the top SS buys and deserves 2nd-round consideration in mixed leagues ... as long as you plan on owning a sound backup. -TH

Starlin Castro, Chicago Cubs | Age: 21 Bat: R Ht: 6-0 Wt: 190 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
64078177136016.277.322.408.730

Donít expect immediate power growth for Castro, but a repeat of 2011 would still complement his other positives. Expect his SB attempts to at least repeat last season with Dale Sveum's aggressive philosophy. High in-play clips have a foundation in his frequent contact, high GB rates and improving liner frequency. BB/K the only flaw in one of the better BA profiles among SS, which makes him a bit more slum-prone but earns him a premium after the elite names leave the board. -TH

Elvis Andrus, Texas Rangers | Age: 23 Bat: R Ht: 6-0 Wt: 200 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5979016556734.276.339.360.699

The power growth Andrus analysts have fleetingly mentioned won't come anytime soon, but he is looking prety darn stable elsewhere atop this elite lineup. SB accuracy improved and will preserve his eliteness there. Frequent contact and restoration of liner frequency bodes well for making most of his speed at the dish. He owns a safe slot among the top mixed SS and deserves consideration in the first handful of rounds. -TH

Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies | Age: 33 Bat: B Ht: 5-8 Wt: 170 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
53671133103819.248.315.371.686

Lower-body injuries have piled up for Rollins, whose value is augmented by SB. Groin strain halted a fine season last year, but the stride he hit in the postseason reminds of his contributions when healthy. Contact rate, BB/K indicate BA won't dip to 2009 or 2010 levels all things equal. 600 AB a riskier bet than in the past, but dismissing the possibility could cost you one of the better value SS in mixed leagues. -TH

Asdrubal Cabrera, Cleveland Indians | Age: 26 Bat: B Ht: 6-0 Wt: 170 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
53771140167110.261.319.425.744

Cabrera's power explosion in 2011 came earlier than most expected. It's not fake; it just benefitted from supreme fortune. His sacrifices in BB/K and contact rate make sense with his shift to power and a more aggressive approach. He'll still be considered among the top 10 mixed SS, but he might come cheap in your league. He'll still put up fine 5-category contributions, even if he takes a dip in his fence clearing. -TH

Alexei Ramirez, Chicago White Sox | Age: 30 Bat: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 175 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5835415886722.271.304.374.678

Trouble that comes with the result of many infield flies caught up to and disarmed the Cuban Missile last year. See 2010, increase aggressiveness, stir. His lineup spot probably affects his approach to some degree. As for his reduction in his willingness to run? Ramirez's declining efficiency won't earn him many green lights. His increasing contact rate could indicate either a tradeoff of power for average (which didn't work) or more defensive swings (which seems likelier, given the poor outcomes in a variety of areas). He's no babe, but it's still too soon to put him out to pasture. A normalized HR/FB and continuation of rate of hard-hit balls suggest some sort of rebound. -NM

Derek Jeter, New York Yankees | Age: 37 Bat: R Ht: 6-3 Wt: 195 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
597821649556.275.332.362.694

Jeter's rebound from 2010 reminded us of his high contact rate, and he basically got more from his profile. Getting hit No. 3,000 lifted a weight off him: He turned things on after that. Still, his GB-based profile looks shaky when you consider his declining speed, which though it'll still give him an acceptable SB total won't be enough to help him reach .300 on a consistent basis. When mixed SS thin out, though, his uni and fleeting hot streaks last year will stand out, as long as you don't inflate his price. -TH

Yunel Escobar, Toronto Blue Jays | Age: 29 Bat: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 200 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
521631409584.269.341.374.715

Escobar's power hasn't come along as many had hoped, thanks to his GB penchant, but his BA skills are jelling, per a 2-year increase in contact rate, 4 straight years of elite BB/Ks, and a history of high in-play clips. He has enough build to eventually grow into power, and that would make him more attractive than the empty BA asset he is now. He's a settle option as a mixed MI or a desperation starting SS in deep leagues. -TH

Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers | Age: 32 Bat: R Ht: 6-1 Wt: 210 Elig: SS

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera
Power was exaggerated, not fake

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5176414014692.271.328.422.750

Peralta has slowly made a shift away from ground balls and to fly balls on stuff in play, which isn't a poor tradeoff if you're a slow poke. His career-high rate of infield fly balls suggests that he was much too lucky for fantasy baseball players to hope for a repeat in BA, though. The power restoration is legit, and 80 RBIs a solid bet, but please don't pay for the batting average. -NM

Ian Desmond, Washington Nationals | Age: 26 Bat: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 210 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
56373151197417.268.316.440.756

Despite the fact that Desmond's surface statistics slid in the past couple of seasons, he demonstrated some improvement in his comfort at the plate and control of the strike zone. In 2011, he struggled and lost the leadoff role, but he got it back, and after the All-Star break Desmond hit .289 with five ding dongs and cut down on the K's. He's getting another crack at handling the leadoff role, where he hit .285 last season. Desmond, 26, appears to be close to consolidating his ability to drive the ball on a regular basis, like he did in the second half, with the aggressive base running that he displayed in the first half. A SS who hits first and rebounds with a .270-type BA, 25-plus SB and 10 or more HR isn't a bad target late in mixed leagues. -TH

Dee Gordon, Los Angeles Dodgers | Age: 23 Bat: L Ht: 5-11 Wt: 150 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
393439522441.242.307.293.600

If all you need are SB, Gordon is your man. With Davey Lopes coaching first and working with his raw speed, we could see as many as 70 from the 23-year-old in a full season. But Ö what else can he offer? A BA improvement probably will result from luck and his legs; his BB/K isn't reliable. His one- or two-category contribution will be appropriate at the right price, but don't overspend for his SB. You're liable to get burned if you do. -TH

Erick Aybar, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Age: 28 Bat: B Ht: 5-10 Wt: 180 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5386814975118.277.311.394.705

Nothing Aybar does really stands out, but at his position you could be left with worse. A high contact rate and the skills to hit for a BABIP that hovers around .300 are good signs for sustaining a respectable BA. The addition of Prince Albert to the lineup can't hurt his chances for more runs scored, either, but you might need to see him repeat that kind of efficiency in stolen-base success before banking on it entirely. -KH

Alcides Escobar, Kansas City Royals | Age: 25 Bat: R Ht: 6-1 Wt: 185 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5936414845128.250.285.325.610

Escobar's speed means he could show a BA improvement soon; he puts the ball on the ground and on a rope often enough. Of course, that improvement won't come close to .300 without a load of good fortune, but it gives more reason to consider him for a deep mixed MI roster spot. -TH

Emilio Bonifacio, Miami Marlins | Age: 26 Bat: B Ht: 5-10 Wt: 195 Elig: 3B SS OF

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
321428222025.255.317.343.660

Bonifacio made the most of his chance at extended PT. His speed-first profile finally joined up with his liner and grounder tendencies to elevate his BA. It'll regress, but he isn't a .260 hitter anymore. Bonifacio's versatility in the field will aid his mixed depth value - with SB as his calling card - through sustained AB. -TH

J.J. Hardy, Baltimore Orioles | Age: 29 Bat: R Ht: 6-1 Wt: 200 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5826314824771.254.297.428.725

In 2011, Hardy showed what he could do with health Ö and more. A bump in fly balls restored the thump that was hindered by a lingering wrist injury the previous season. Despite his penchant to make contact, however, he won't be much help in the BA column, and he has little to no SB contributions to speak of. Even in his busiest season in 3 years, he still missed time with an injury; that warns you about his enduring fragility. He's one of the better midrange power sources among SS, but you'll have to lower your expectations of him as a deep mixed starter. -TH

Stephen Drew, Arizona Diamondbacks | Age: 28 Bat: L Ht: 6-0 Wt: 185 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
4405710912585.248.328.423.751

Idyllic views of Drew are waning: He has had trouble putting things together into one big season since '08. Consider that he could at some point hit 20 HR, steal double-digit bags and hit .290 with aligned stars. Paying for that in 2012, however, won't help, especially since he might miss part of it thanks to the ankle he fractured last season. He won't justify anything more than a mixed SS flier; that keeps you from being burned if he can't overcome his struggles versus southpaws and do something more than supply mediocre across-the-board output. -TH

Cliff Pennington, Oakland Athletics | Age: 27 Bat: B Ht: 5-10 Wt: 215 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS

Alexi Casilla, Minnesota Twins | Age: 27 Bat: B Ht: 5-9 Wt: 185 Elig: 2B SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
65915065.231.282.308.590

Here lies a combination of health and performance concerns. Is investing in Casilla really worth the potential 20 stolen bases? If you're in a room that has gone cool on him, it sure is. Don't pay for miracles, and you may give yourself a decent shot at making something on Casilla. -NM

Alex Gonzalez, Milwaukee Brewers | Age: 35 Bat: R Ht: 5-11 Wt: 216 Elig: SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
25329453230.178.214.237.451

Gonzalez is a bargain source for power at SS. His streakiness that has carried fantasy teams at times, however, also produces the crippling clips that make him inherently risky, especially at age 35. Low BB/9 assures his reliance on in-play fortune for any improvement there, even with his acceptable contact frequency. Miller Park will aid his yard-leaving, but he'll only be fleetingly useful in mixed leagues; his true value lies in his likely NL-only bargain cost as a useful alternative to the pricey tiers. -TH

Jed Lowrie, Houston Astros | Age: 27 Bat: B Ht: 6-0 Wt: 180 Elig: 3B SS

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5416814513632.268.328.416.744

Lowrie will have a clear path to AB in HOU, which gives him a chance to build on fleeting skills he showed in BOS. High fly-ball rates cement power potential; his new park won't hurt. He does the bulk of his damage vs. LHP; figuring out RHP will take him up a notch. Though he could improve with more reps, his BB/K doesn't point to BA upside. A flier mixed MI. -TH

ABRHHRRBISBBAOBPSLGOPS
5597414513562.259.298.397.695

Cozart underwent Tommy John surgery on his non-throwing arm last season while in the midst of a 7-game hit streak to start his MLB career. He was continuing the growth he showed earlier in the year during his second Triple-A stretch. He'll run in CIN, and it's a favorable environment to aid power development. Will he lose AB to more experienced players? For the cheap mixed MI flier price for his HR-SB combo, you shouldn't worry all that much. If you pin your NL-only SS hopes on him, though, you could be bitten by his flaws. -TH
