Jonathan Papelbon, Philadelphia Phillies | Age: 31 Thr: R Ht: 6-4 Wt: 225

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
44068562117832.781.07

Papelbon will receive plenty of chances with this staff. Two years of poor LOB% luck only thing stopping him from return.of 2007-2009 excellence. Not like 2011 wasn't elite, though. Heavier use of two-seamer and sinker kept him fresher, got him into fewer jams and improved K ability with diverse arsenal, which will also aid him in his new home park. A top-five mixed stopper. -TH

Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves | Age: 23 Thr: R Ht: 5-11 Wt: 205

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
441673917221092.280.91

Kimbrel's fastball-slider combo is one of the best in the game. He showed his dominance in his opponents' lack of hard contact, which goes nicely with his top-shelf K/9. BB/9 will be a concern; so will how he responds to a busy rookie season. He cut down on his 2H free passes, though. His late-season tiring is prompting ATL to manage him more carefully, which could take away a few SV but isn't enough to remove him from consideration as the top closer for mixed leaguers. His skills are already among the safest at the position. -TH

Mariano Rivera, New York Yankees | Age: 42 Thr: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 185

Chicago Cubs CL Carlos Marmol
Marmol sliding back to normal?

Sure, there's the risk of the 42-year-old Rivera falling off the table this season. But you should be encouraged by his K/9 bump last year, which ballooned as the season wore on, and how often he got the first strike on opposing hitters - great signs for the vet. He's still in peak physical condition. His one pitch can still carry him. Even if it slips a little and he allows more contact, it'll probably be a more comfortable fall than it would be for most others - so he gets a 3.00 ERA or so instead of a 1.91. This keeps him among the elite mixed stoppers. -TH

Drew Storen, Washington Nationals | Age: 24 Thr: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 180

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
3971582120682.661.10

Whoa, what a difference in the K/9 in his second half. It appears that, in August and September, Washington scaled back his workload. He flourished in that period. Roto owners can't write 40 saves from any reliever in ink, and Storen might see some correction in other areas, but this is a rock-solid closer, especially since the Nats seem to be ready to employ him as one almost exclusively. -NM

John Axford, Milwaukee Brewers | Age: 28 Thr: R Ht: 6-5 Wt: 195

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
43368562632843.441.29

Axford's full-season follow-up to 2010 saw an improved BB/9 with similar K and grounder inducement. A notable drop in opponents' liner rate shows how hard he has become to hit. Axford's peripherals are some of the safest to bank on among fantasy closers, and he's a top-5 mixed option. -TH

Heath Bell, Miami Marlins | Age: 34 Thr: R Ht: 6-3 Wt: 240

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
3263602525533.571.35

Bell's closing experience keeps him in the top-10 mixed CL discussion, but this won't be the 2009 or 2010 version of him. Last season's K/9 drop is a sign of things to come; he aimed to induce more contact - more sinkers. He still boasts the velocity to luck into a notable improvement on last season, but the 34-year-old won't be a shutdown closer anymore unless he goes back to that. Bell remains a solid option, but you'll have to reset your expectations. -TH

Huston Street, San Diego Padres | Age: 28 Thr: R Ht: 6-0 Wt: 190

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
22846341512472.931.00

Street had 29 saves in 2011 during a season that saw him land on the DL and lose his closer job to Rafael Betancourt. Had highest contact rate against of his career; an unusually high BABIP and HR/9 followed. Expect a rebound in the latter two. The move from Coors Field to PETCO Park can't be overlooked, especially considering that the Mile High City was destined to hurt him because of his typically lofty fly-ball rates. -KH

J.J. Putz, Arizona Diamondbacks | Age: 35 Thr: R Ht: 6-5 Wt: 250

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
13455451812592.951.04

Back and elbow problems sent Putz to the DL last year and corrupted his velocity early on. He regained it, along with his elite form, before the end of 2011. Even for age-35 season, he'll boast elite skills. The only issue is including sideline trips into his price. In some circles, that'll provide a discount, but most will continue to confidently buy his body of work and worry about the consequences later. -TH

Andrew Bailey, Boston Red Sox | Age: 27 Thr: R Ht: 6-3 Wt: 240

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
21048411714473.191.15

In 2011 Bailey was bit by the injury bug again. His forearm woes forewarn of potentially chronic arm issues for the former Tommy John surgery patient. When he's on the field, though, his skills are bankable, evidenced in the K/9 rebound after returning from the DL last year. His fly-ball lean could bite back a bit more with BOS, but CL don't have to worry about that as much in most cases. Likely LOB% rebound would bring him closer to 2009-2010 numbers. Buy as you normally would - with his health risks in the front of your mind. -TH

Rafael Betancourt, Colorado Rockies | Age: 36 Thr: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 200

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
12858542110563.261.10

He'll turn 37 in April and yields plenty of fly balls, but Betancourt boasts pristine control. He's tough to hit because his fastball, which kicks up to the mid-90s, frequents the higher portion of the strike zone. He threw a strike on the first pitch versus 73 percent of the hitters he faced last year, tops among MLB relievers. Will those aerial allowances catch up to him if he loses a tick off his four-seamer - and if so, will his slider, his only other offering, pick up the slack? At his likely price as a midrange or low-end No. 2 mixed stopper, though, the pitfalls are tempered, and there it's worth paying for his eye-popping peripherals now that saves are joining the picture. -TH

Jose Valverde, Detroit Tigers | Age: 33 Thr: R Ht: 6-4 Wt: 255

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
2858492123453.261.24

Anyone who comes off a 49-for-49 saves season is due for a downfall. Sorry, it's science. Valverde, who'll turn 34 in late March, posted his highest first-strike percentage since 2008, but he allowed more contact and saw his WHIP increase while walking at least four per nine in each of the last two seasons. He didn't botch a closing chance, but he proved more hittable. Papa Grande is a fastball-sinker hurler whose 1 dropped nearly 1.5 mph last year. His battles with wildness have put him in extensive trouble - in performance and health - in the recent past. The burly righty deserves consideration in the top third or half of mixed stoppers, but he's not among the elite shortlist. -TH

Joel Hanrahan, Pittsburgh Pirates | Age: 30 Thr: R Ht: 6-4 Wt: 245

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
32663522732693.861.33

Greatly reduced his fly-ball percantage against. Pittsburgh's D isn't great, though. How long can he rely on this unit to turn grounders into outs so often? Hanrahan also made a big improvement in BB/9 - the kind of growth that is difficult to replicate immediately. But there seems to have been some sacrifice of K's to pitch to contact, to stay in the zone. The righty didn't sacrifice velocity - actually, he upped it. His K/9 - and BB/9 - increased in the second half. Those pre-break paces were going to be difficult to maintain, and there's some correction due, but 2011 appears to be a true growth year. -NM

Kenley Jansen, Los Angeles Dodgers | Age: 24 Thr: R Ht: 6-6 Wt: 220

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
36694121281022.741.00

Talk about skills you bank on. Jansen, a coverted C, has historic K talent that could make him a top-5 fantasy CL with the stopper job. Shoulder and heart issues stifled his growth last year, but he still made the record books. Fly balls are his big bugaboo, but for CL, it's an overrated proposition, especially in a pitcher-friendly locale like Chavez Ravine. Many will forget about him since he doesn't have the job; that's when you pounce and reap the rewards. -TH

Jason Motte, St. Louis Cardinals | Age: 29 Thr: R Ht: 6-0 Wt: 200

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
33150371613552.881.00

Motte learned how to shut down LHB while also kicking up his GB rate, two of the biggest hurdles that kept him from getting consistent saves work in the past. He threw more cutters, which gave him a nice alternative to his four-seamer and helped the converted catcher mature as a hurler. Will this organization back him now that Tony La Russa is gone? That concern shouldn't trump your confidence in his skills, which back him up long term in the role. -TH

Mike Adams, Texas Rangers | Age: 33 Thr: R Ht: 6-5 Wt: 195

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
3259532221513.361.25

Farnsworth took the skills he learned while trying out for the KC rotation in 2010 and applied them toward a remarkable 2011 revival as TB CL. He sacrificed some K/9 to post the best BB/9 of his career, induce more GB … he just became more effective. His LOB% and opponents' hit rate were a bit lofty but not unrealistic for a RP of his newly discovered caliber. With another year as CL, his regression won't be harsh, and he can be had at a value in mixed formats. -TH

Joe Nathan, Texas Rangers | Age: 37 Thr: R Ht: 6-4 Wt: 225

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
33766572317753.141.12

In his first campaign following Tommy John surgery, Nathan recovered from early velocity woes and a spring DL stint to reclaim his old talent and role. His 8.66 K/9 and 64.2 left-on-base percentage should rebound. Nathan's last two campaigns, however, have produced fly-ball rates near 50 percent; that isn't always crippling for closers, but it's scarier now that he's in Arlington, not Minnesota. Can his repaired but aging arm work effectively on back-to-back days all season? The highly skilled Mike Adams is Plan B (1A?). Nathan will be more like his old self - near No. 2 mixed stopper territory - but don't overpay for a full recovery and the allure of more opps when he still carries internal and environmental risks. -TH

Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants | Age: 29 Thr: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 205

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
2228261113273.541.39

Wilson's 2011 was a natural regression, but SF rushed him back last year because of their postseason race. Closer value is often already inflated - now you want to strongly buy one with a potentially funky elbow situation? Maybe he needs to rest more. The 2011 swinging strike % decrease could be blamed on elbow injury and his early-season oblique injury, but his high-effort delivery might start catching up with him. It's not like he's immune to walks. His floor is probably lower - 2009, 2010 probably not the case anymore. If his price drops, you could give him a slight benefit of doubt, but don't write off performance and health risks. -TH

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP

Santos, who's been a pitcher for only a few years, has some heavy, super nasty stuff. But he's yielded walks at a rate of 4.30 per nine innings in his two big-league seasons. He began to improve his control rate in the second half of 2011, although there's no evidence that he'll make a significant advancement. The former infielder moves to a division full of heavy hitters who tend to make opponents pay for issuing free passes, and he's still shaky versus LHB. He'll probably go unchallenged for save opportunities, however, and he lines up as an intriguing mid-level closer. -NM

Brandon League, Seattle Mariners | Age: 28 Thr: R Ht: 6-2 Wt: 210

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
23269612327573.001.28

No purely statistical explanation for his incredible reduction in walks allowed per nine, but he displayed high-end control in the minors. A combination of factors - such as increased confidence in his stuff (particularly the sinker) and approach and his focus on pitching to contact - may explain it. League's flirtations with hittability and heavy dependence on his defense combine to drive down his left-on-base percentage, but his strength is in limiting base runners. He's a relatively safe target as a low-cost closer, minus the whole he'll-be-trade-bait thing. -NM

Jordan Walden, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Age: 24 Thr: R Ht: 6-5 Wt: 235

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
3150431820553.241.26

Walden spent only one month with a BB/9 below 4.00. That doesn't pave the way for an obvious improvement in the area. Despite his hard stuff, he's proven to be hittable. Mix in the possible expectations from the roto field of "only bigger things to come," and you have a recipe for overvaluation. It's not certain that he'll receive every save opportunity in 2012 or that he's the Halos' long-term solution. That bet looks pretty good, but it's not going to pay much. -NM

Matt Thornton, Chicago White Sox | Age: 35 Thr: L Ht: 6-6 Wt: 235

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
4263592317553.291.21

April turned out to be Thornton's only rocky month, and fielding errors (including a few of his own) extended innings. Red flags: eroding control rate and increasing hittability. Age is slowly becoming a factor, too, but the emphasis is on "slowly." Some correction to the good is due, too. Last season, the southpaw began throwing a cutter, which may account for struggles that many pitchers encounter when implementing the pitch. He had a rough start, but he recovered pretty quickly. With Chris Sale headed to the rotation and Sergio Santos north of the border, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see Thornton to lead the ChiSox in saves. What stands in his way this time? How quickly Addison Reed gain's the new (old) regime's trust. -NM

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP

Johnson settled into the BAL CL role down the stretch last year. His velocity has typically been sound, but the two-seam specialist has been more geared toward GB. That could change, even by accident, if he remains specialized as a stopper for a full season. His alluring BB/9: another reason to speculate on him as the winner in BAL's CL battle. -TH

2012 Fantasy Baseball Projections

WSVIPHERBBKERAWHIP
00000000.000.00

Capps gutted through plenty of performances despite some loss of velocity on both his four-seam and two-seam fastballs As a result, he saw a significant rise in contact rate against. The Twins believe that they abused Capps, and the right-hander believes that he wasn't prepared, physically, for that kind of season. In 2012, his role is defined, and he's healthy. Do you buy it? Considering how bad his numbers were last season, he was still pretty fortunate. If that masked a massive decline, 2012 could be rough. But fantasy players won't force you to risk much to test Minnesota's faith, and some of Capps' peripherals support their story. Don't be afraid if you have little to lose. -NM

Steady as Mo goes

Sloppy mechanics and approach, among other things, doomed Marmol last year. The K/9 is worth buying at the right price, but there are still hindrances to his game that warrant caution to those considering overpaying. His BB/9 flaws cap his upside and could land his job security in trouble again. -TH

He's either lost or sacrificed some fastball velocity. If it's the former, he's adapted well, and if it's the latter, it's for the sake of improved control and command. Either way, it's working. Although the correction gods won't love his prospects of repeating those 2011 marks, he has more going for him - experience, no major health problems, strong track record of recent performance - than any of the other arms that the A's are considering for save opportunities. For as long as the perception of a competition is present, Balfour could be a decent bargain. Once roto players begin to buy him as the winner, profitability becomes incredibly dicey. -NM

Is Perez on the verge of a breakthrough in control rate? Three months of a sub-3.00 BB/9, one very close to it. Second-half blow-ups seemed like the work of the god of rectification, however, and he was bound to show up at some point. The decline in K/9 is a bit disturbing, and a minor dip in velocity alone can't explain it entirely. Health isn't necessarily a culprit, but the warning flag is up. -NM

Francisco's health has held back his peripherals, which for years have fallen in line with some of the position's elite. Though HR continue to bug him, lowering his fly-ball allowance over the last 2 years has aided his ability to strand runners. Last year, he improved his fastball deployment vs. LHB. Myers' corrections last year in LOB% and ERA will be less of a worry if he'll stick as closer. When he made the starter-to-stopper transition in 2007, his K/9 jumped, as it tends to do with such a switch. The 31-year-old's velocity had toned down while he was in the rotation because he changed his approach. The key for him will be learning to dial it back up in high-effort spurts. His past, albeit brief, experience doing so promotes optimism; so does his combination of capable GB inducement. But will he have the same heat? The rebuilding Astros will give him a long leash, but he's not to be trusted as anything more than one of the last mixed closers taken. -TH

Guerra doesn't aim to K everyone, but his velocity makes him effective at pitching to contact. That's not the picture-perfect profile for a CL, but his skipper trusts him; that might be enough to give him the gig, at least to start with. Guerra will see a correction to his pristine 2011 numbers, but he isn't that bad of a pitcher. There are still SV to be had here, and many might forget that he actually did the job for a long stretch last year. Take advantage if he's being ignored and your investment isn't strong. -TH

Burnett's swinging strike percentage has been trending downward for a few years, so that 8.86 K/9 of 2010 was much likelier an extreme outlier than the result of some significant breakthrough. Frankly, he should give up fewer home runs than he has, too. -NM

To what does Fuentes owe this 2011 post-break discovery of control rate gains? Some pretty strict usage based on matchups. Will the A's continue deploying him that way? If they do, he could perform quite well, but he'd have less to offer. If they don't, he might be in trouble, assuming that there wasn't some actual recovery there. In a muddy saves picture, managers play matchups, though. AL players with room to reserve this southpaw should consider tossing a buck or two his way. -NM
