First Baseman

1B | Justin Morneau | Minnesota Twins | Injury, Fantasy
Updating an earlier report, Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) said he could retire if concussion symptoms return. "Well, I don't think there will be a career if it's something I'm dealing with,'' Morneau said. "That's the reality of the whole thing. I'm obviously not going to continue to mess around with this if it continues to be a problem. There comes a point where you can only torture yourself for so long."

1B | Angel Villalona | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 1B Angel Villalona had his report date to spring camp delayed once again due to repeated problems with his work visa. "It's a visa that requires that they be an elite athlete. And currently, he's not in what they viewed as ... top physical condition," vice president of player personnel Bobby Evans said. The HIPAA Privacy Rule prevented Evans from citing specifics about Villalona's health status, but Villalona has a history of weight issues.

1B | Brad Hawpe | Texas Rangers | Injury
Texas Rangers 1B Brad Hawpe (elbow) will focus on playing first base this spring as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. He is purely insurance in case 1B Mitch Moreland (wrist) has a setback from his injury.

1B | Adam LaRoche | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy
Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche (shoulder) played catch from 150 feet Thursday, Feb. 23, and he said he is progressing, but "it didn't feel normal." The strength in his shoulder has improved, but he said it won't be 100 percent until long past opening day. "When they did the surgery, they said it could be up to two years before you don't feel anything," LaRoche said. "The good news is, I don't feel like it's going to be one hard throw in a game, and it sets me back two or three days." He feels much stronger and hasn't dealt with soreness the day after he throws but that could change once he's working out more. LaRoche has had no problems swinging.

1B | Mark Trumbo | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Mark Trumbo (foot) has spent the early days of spring training fielding grounders at third base and making throws to second and first base. "He's getting after it, asking intelligent questions, fielding and throwing well," bench coach Rob Picciolo said. "But it's much too early to tell. There will be growing pains."

1B | Kendrys Morales | Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim | Injury, Fantasy
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Kendrys Morales (leg) says he is pain-free this spring. He took batting practice Thursday, Feb. 23, and ran some low-intensity sprints in the outfield. Morales is running outside every other day and running on a treadmill on the other days.

1B | Ryan Howard | Philadelphia Phillies | Injury, Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies INF Kevin Frandsen, who tore his Achilles' four springs ago, said the rehab from an Achilles' injury is slow, hard and tedious. "No chance," Frandsen said. "I don't think you're 100 percent for at least a year or year and a half, where you feel like you're doing everything you've done in the past. It took quite a long time. And I was early on every thing; ahead of schedule with no setbacks. When I played, everyone was like, 'Oh, you must be 100 percent.' No. It's still a process. The whole thing, you have to continue it." 1B Ryan Howard (Achilles') tore his Achilles' in the team's final playoff game last season, and the team is targeting a May return.

Second Baseman

2B | Rickie Weeks | Milwaukee Brewers | Injury, Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks (ankle) said Thursday, Feb. 23, that he's open to hitting anywhere but fifth in the lineup this year. OF Corey Hart is also not very fond of the No. 5 spot. "Anything other than five, I'm good," Weeks said. "I feel like I'm not doing anything. You might have people (on base) in front of you, but once you drive them in, you feel like you're stagnant. The game kind of slows down to me." He said his ankle is around 95 percent healthy from his injury last year.

2B | Freddy Sanchez | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) said he is on track to break camp with the team. He has been taking ground balls and batting practice while avoiding all other drills.

2B | Daniel Murphy | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy wasn't very efficient in turning double plays last season. Of 20 ground balls that were hit to him with a runner on first base, the team only turned double plays on four of them, for a conversion rate of just 20 percent. A normal second baseman in the majors typically has a conversion rate of around 50 percent.

SS | Stephen Drew | Arizona Diamondbacks | Injury, Fantasy
Arizona Diamondbacks SS Stephen Drew (ankle) is showing more mobility while taking grounders Thursday, Feb. 23. "It's coming along well," Drew said. "The healing's coming along. I'm pretty excited about that. There was a time when I would do things like that I would have to shut it down for three or four days and let it calm down." He showed more range during his workouts Thursday, and he said it's tougher to go to his left than to the right. Drew thinks he's ahead of schedule and manager Kirk Gibson agrees.

SS | Brendan Ryan | Seattle Mariners | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners SS Brendan Ryan (back) was throwing at close to full speed Thursday, Feb. 23. He will serve as the designated hitter in an intrasquad game Friday, Feb. 24, but it's unknown if he'll play the field.

SS | Jimmy Rollins | Philadelphia Phillies | Fantasy
Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel is preaching patience at the plate this year, especially when related to SS Jimmy Rollins, the team's leadoff hitter. "Jimmy can get in the count 2-1, 3-1 quite a bit, then he'll chase a ball up out of the strike zone and hit a fly ball to center field," Manuel said. "I talked him about that. … If he looks for a fastball and it's not a strike, then try to lay off it. Learn and practice that way, and also in the game."

SS | Tsuyoshi Nishioka | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said SS Tsuyoshi Nishioka could see time at third base this spring.

SS | Zack Cozart | Cincinnati Reds | Fantasy
It seems as though Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker is comfortable hitting SS Zack Cozart second in the lineup behind 2B Brandon Phillips this year. "Age has very little to do with it," Baker said. "Skill, ability, aptitude, unselfishness. That's where your most unselfish player hits, one of your smartest players in the lineup hits." Baker would prefer someone who makes frequent contact in the second spot.

SS | Jose Reyes | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
Miami Marlins SS Jose Reyes will start spring training as the leadoff man, followed by OF Emilio Bonifacio. However, Bonifacio could be moved down the order, too, with 2B Omar Infante in the No. 2 spot.

Third Baseman

3B | Ryan Zimmerman | Washington Nationals | Fantasy
The Washington Nationals and 3B Ryan Zimmerman must agree on the presence of a no-trade clause as they negotiate a long-term contract extension. Washington has offered full no-trade clauses before.

3B | Eric Chavez | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 3B Eric Chavez will see more time as the backup first baseman than OF Nick Swisher, according to manager Joe Girardi.

3B | Hanley Ramirez | Miami Marlins | Fantasy
Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said 3B Hanley Ramirez will remain at shortstop even if SS Jose Reyes is injured at any point during the season. OF Emilio Bonifacio would likely move to short in that case.

C | Salvador Perez | Kansas City Royals | Fantasy
Kansas City Royals SP Luke Hochevar has had nothing but excellent things to say so far about C Salvador Perez. "He really, really impressed me," Hochevar said. "Granted, I was spoiled throwing to (Jason) Kendall. He taught me a lot about navigating through a lineup, game planning and game calling, and he can catch and throw with the best of them. He taught me a lot, and knowing what I learned from Kendall and having Perez step in back there, I was impressed." Coaches praise Perez for his smarts and willingness to continually study the game.

C | Buster Posey | San Francisco Giants | Injury, Fantasy
San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey (leg) took batting practice and worked on some catching Thursday, Feb. 23, but manager Bruce Bochy still plans to take a cautious approach with his star catcher. "We have to find out how he responds," Bochy said. "I've said all along that it won't be until the middle of spring before he ramps it up a little more."

Texas Rangers C Mike Napoli (ankle) felt good after a heavy workload of catching bullpens Thursday, Feb. 23.

OF | Ryan Braun | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun did not argue the science or evidence of tampering in his case, but rather that protocol had not been followed. According to a source, one of the collectors was supposed to ship Braun's sample by FedEx/Kinkos but thought the store was closed late one evening. Instead, the collector took the sample home and stored it in a cool place. Policy states that the sample must be shipped as soon as possible.

OF | Ichiro Suzuki | Seattle Mariners | Fantasy
Seattle Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki is going with a wider batting stance now that he's shifted to the No. 3 hitter.

OF | Franklin Gutierrez | Seattle Mariners | Injury, Fantasy
Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (leg) and 2B Carlos Guillen (leg) were held out of running drills Thursday, Feb. 23, so that they could rest their legs. Neither will play in an intrasquad game Friday, Feb. 24, though both are expected to compete Sunday, Feb. 26. OF Trayvon Robinson (hamstring) and 1B Luis A. Jimenez (elbow) are still slowed, too, and Jimenez was given Thursday off.

OF | Jason Bay | New York Mets | Fantasy
New York Mets OF Jason Bay said he is feeling great this spring and instead of making yet another tweak to his swing in the offseason, he focused on mental repetition. "There were way too many changes being made," manager Terry Collins said. "We've got to use that video we had of him when he was swinging good and try to get him to stay on those tracks."

OF | Carlos Beltran | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals OF Carlos Beltran said he underwent a rigorous offseason program designed to strengthen his lower half and increase his weight-lifting capacity. "We did a lot of things we didn't do the year before, and that is why I'm so happy this year," Beltran said. "This year I look forward to playing a lot of more (Grapefruit League) games and being able to get the timing and feel my legs and my body out there." The team doesn't plan to overwork him in spring training. Beltran is a candidate to move to center field once OF Allen Craig (knee) returns from his injury.

OF | Coco Crisp | Oakland Athletics | Fantasy
Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp is an option to hit third in the lineup this year because manager Bob Melvin prefers 2B Jemile Weeks at leadoff. Crisp said he fielded multi-year offers in the offseason from the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.

SP | Mike Minor | Atlanta Braves | Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor is in the lead for the No. 5 starting spot over SPs Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado. "I feel like I proved myself," Minor said. "I was in Triple-A all last year pretty much. The year before I had some time (in the majors). I'm getting older every year, so there's no reason for me to be sitting in Triple-A." Teheran or Delgado could also crack the rotation with SP Tim Hudson (back) out.

SP | Tim Lincecum | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum said he wants to throw more strikes this year, so he will only throw fastballs and changeups during his spring pitching sessions "until I get my arm speed up to where it needs to be."

SP | Jake Peavy | Chicago White Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle) dropped 10 pounds this offseason in order to take some weight off his ankle that was injured while pitching for the San Diego Padres. "I'm healthy as I can possibly be," Peavy said. "Let's see where it takes us. "I feel the same, same move, everything's the same." He has no restrictions on the movement of his head.

SP | Jenrry Mejia | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) looked sharp in his abbreviated bullpen Thursday, Feb. 23, the first session since having surgery last May. "I was happy to see him on the mound today," manager Terry Collins said. "I thought his arm was good and loose." Mejia is unlikely to join the team until late this season.

SP | Jon Lester | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy,
Boston Red Sox SPs Jon Lester and Daniel Bard both impressed manager Bobby Valentine while throwing bullpens Thursday, Feb. 23. "Daniel Bard showed that changeup a few times, showed the breaking ball a few times," Valentine said. "(He) had his two-seamer going well. (He) looked very healthy and throwing the ball very nicely."

SP | Chien-Ming Wang | Washington Nationals | Injury, Fantasy,
The Washington Nationals are scaling back SP Chien-Ming Wang's (shoulder) work schedule this spring as he tries to return from shoulder surgery. Wang will throw, then take two days off before throwing again. He will throw his second bullpen Friday, Feb. 24. Wang feels normal after his first bullpen, and he's expected to be the team's No. 5 starter.

SP | Roy Oswalt | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,

SP | Phil Hughes | New York Yankees | Fantasy,
New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes could begin the year at Class AAA if SP Freddy Garcia beats him out for the No. 5 starting job. The team sees Hughes as a starter, so his development would be slowed if they put him in the bullpen to start the year.

SP | Yu Darvish | Texas Rangers | Fantasy,
Texas Rangers C Mike Napoli, who caught SP Yu Darvish's bullpen Thursday, Feb. 23, was impressed with the Japanese import. "You could tell he has good command," Napoli said. "When he throws one not where he wants it, you can tell he's not happy about it. I was impressed. I caught a slider, curveball, fastball, two-seamer to both sides, a splitter. They're only going at 80 percent right now, but the ball comes out of his hand good. I was real impressed."

"It's just precautionary. We're not taking a chance," manager Don Mattingly said of Kershaw's minor setback. "He's on schedule for his first start. SP | Chris Volstad | Chicago Cubs | Fantasy,
The Chicago Cubs like the potential they have in SP Chris Volstad. "The upside of this guy is phenomenal," pitching coach Chris Bosio said. "Being able to find young pitchers with that kind of size and that kind of stuff, that's a needle in a haystack. The kid's a beast out there. And he does fill up a doorway walking through a room."

SP | Tommy Hanson | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy,
Atlanta Braves SP Tommy Hanson (concussion) is back in camp Thursday, Feb. 23, after suffering a minor concussion in a car accident earlier this week. His headache is gone, but he is sore and bruised. Hanson is hoping to be back in action next week, and he doesn't think the setback will affect his chances to be ready by opening day.

RP | Bobby Jenks | Boston Red Sox | Injury, Fantasy,
The Boston Red Sox will investigate the situation surrounding RP Bobby Jenks' (back) emergency surgery in December to correct a failed procedure. Jenks said "there was an error" when he first had surgery to remove bone spurs from his spine Dec. 12. That surgery was done by Dr. Kirkham Wood. "The third one was started and not finished. So basically there was a serrated edge that sliced me open in two different spots and I was leaking spinal fluid," Jenks said.

RP | Matt Capps | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy,
Minnesota Twins RP Matt Capps plans to fully stretch himself out this spring. He said he was never allowed to fully stretch himself out with throwing last spring, which led to his rough season.
