LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers declared for the 2012 NFL Draft as a sophomore and has enough potential to be a late first-round selection. His size, speed and youth should make him a coveted prospect to teams utilizing either a 3-4 or 4-3 alignment.

Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
Beastly potential

Strengths

  • Good size (6-foot-6, 306 pounds)
  • Strong hands with a long wingspan
  • Versatile - can play three- or five-technique
  • Plays with leverage and flexibility against the run
  • Explosive tackler with wrap-up skills
  • Plays with a high motor and tremendous passion
  • Solid repertoire of pass-rushing moves - swim, bull and rip
  • Quality lateral agility and closing speed
  • Shows awareness in disrupting passing lanes
  • Remarkable upside

Weaknesses

  • Tends to struggle against doubles
  • Can be slow to locate the ball
  • Fundamentals lapse when he is tiring
  • Pass-rushing success wasn't evident in 2011 (2.0 sacks)
  • Needs to refine his footwork and improve his first step
  • Raw and relatively inexperienced - one-year wonder?

Expected draft placement

Will Brockers take the league by storm in a few years, or is he another highly touted LSU defensive line prospect that is destined to wallow in mediocrity at the next level?

It is conceivable that Brockers will be drafted as early as the Carolina Panthers (No. 8) or Miami Dolphins (No. 9), but he should not fall past the Denver Broncos (No. 25).

The Seattle Seahawks (No. 12) could be an option as well, but don't discount the San Diego Chargers (No. 18) if they part ways with Luis A. Castillo and cannot land a prospect that better suits their immediate needs. In other words, they may view him as the best defensive player available at that stage of the draft.
