Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro is about as impressive of a prospect that his position has offered in recent memory. The senior enters the 2012 NFL Draft as one of the best available players, regardless of position.

David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
Surefire NFL stud

Strengths

  • Intelligent, hard worker
  • Of high character and easily coachable
  • Excellent run blocker, especially in a zone-blocking system
  • Quick off the ball - great initial punch
  • Very good pass blocker
  • Quick feel allows him to pull and get to the second level
  • Recovers well if he misses a block
  • Ideal awareness of blitzing linebackers
  • Fires low and hard in short-yardage and goal line situations
  • Great size (6-foot-5, 310 pounds)
  • Elite all-around talent with a bright future in the NFL
  • Dependable and experienced - 26 starts the past two years

Weaknesses

  • Tends to overextend himself and can be pushed backward
  • Inconsistently dominant - sometimes plays to the level of his competition
  • Occasionally misses his assigned block
  • Benefited from playing on a tremendous offensive line?

Expected draft placement

DeCastro is very likely to come off the board within the first 20 picks of the draft. Teams that appear to have the most need and interest in his services include the Kansas City Chiefs (No. 11), Arizona Cardinals (No. 13), Dallas Cowboys (No. 14) and Cincinnati Bengals (No. 17, No. 22).
