First Baseman

Free-agent 1B Dmitri Young (Nationals) said he spoke with several teams during the winter meetings and was told by about 10 teams that they would stay in contact with him. Most of the teams willing to stay in touch were in the American League. Young likely will have to accept a minor league contract and compete for a spot in the roster.

1B | Prince Fielder | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
The Toronto Blue Jays are not serious suitors for free-agent 1B Prince Fielder (Brewers), according to multiple people in the industry.


Shortstop

SS | Adam Everett | Retired Players | Transaction
The Cleveland Indians hired former SS Adam Everett as a special assistant to baseball operations. He'll instruct infielders at spring training and will provide instruction during regular season.


Third Baseman

3B | Mark Reynolds | Baltimore Orioles | Fantasy
Baltimore Orioles 3B Mark Reynolds will start the season as the team's starting third baseman after thought was given to leaving him at first base. 1B Chris Davis will start at first base. Reynolds was hoping to lose some weight before the season by focusing on cardio-based workouts. He thinks that bulking up last season was detrimental to his range on the field.


Outfielder

The Baltimore Orioles have some interest in free-agent OF Johnny Damon (Rays).

OF | Allen Craig | St. Louis Cardinals | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals OF Allen Craig (knee) said he had to have a screw inserted into his knee this offseason to repair his shattered kneecap from a collision with a steel pole in June. Craig said he's doing light strengthening exercises and is surprisingly feeling great at this point. Craig said he hopes to get into some games near the end of spring training, but his timetable is four to six months from his November surgery.

OF | Josh Hamilton | Texas Rangers | Injury, Fantasy
Updating previous reports, Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton (abdominal, groin) was hurt worse in the 2011 World Series than was publicly known. He said three of his adductors, which help pull the knees and thighs together, were detached in his left leg. The fourth adductor was nearly torn, and he had a torn abdominal muscle. He had surgery earlier this offseason and said he was walking two miles one day later and running the week after that. He's now working out with teammates at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and feels good.

The Washington Nationals continue to be in contact with free-agent OF Rick Ankiel (Nationals). If he did re-sign with the Nationals, he likely would be part of a platoon or the No. 4 outfielder with a chance to earn more playing time.

OF | Carl Crawford | Boston Red Sox | Fantasy
Former Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein confirmed that owner John Henry was the lone executive that was against signing OF Carl Crawford last offseason.

OF | Carlos Gomez | Milwaukee Brewers | Fantasy
Milwaukee Brewers OF Carlos Gomez can make an additional $25,000 each for 450, 475, 500 and 525 plate appearances this season. His incentives are identical to his performance bonuses last season.

OF | Carlos Gonzalez | Colorado Rockies | Injury, Fantasy
Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (wrist) said he is fully healed from multiple wrist injuries last year, and he expects to be ready for spring training without any limitations. Gonzalez has reportedly been swinging a bat and working out in Venezuela. He will move back to left field in 2012.

OF | Luke Scott | Tampa Bay Rays | Fantasy
The Tampa Bay Rays plan to play left-handed hitting OF Luke Scott against right-handed and left-handed hurlers this year, so the team won't need to carry an extra righty stick on the bench to face lefties.

OF | Yoenis Cespedes | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy
Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes will play for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Republic winter league while he waits to be declared a free agent for the big leagues. He will make his debut Thursday, Jan. 12, and will initially serve as the designated hitter.

The Chicago Cubs will not be interested in signing free-agent OF Manny Ramirez (Rays), according to president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.


Starting Pitcher

The Texas Rangers have made inquiries about free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Phillies).

SP | Hiroki Kuroda | free agent | Free Agents
The New York Yankees could show interest in free-agent SP Hiroki Kuroda (Dodgers) if his price goes down at some point. The team sees Kuroda as a reliable option to deliver innings.

SP | Manny Parra | Milwaukee Brewers | Transaction, Fantasy,
The Milwaukee Brewers avoided arbitration with SP Manny Parra Thursday, Jan. 12, by agreeing to a one-year deal. Financial terms weren't given.

SP | Johan Santana | New York Mets | Injury, Fantasy,
New York Mets SP Johan Santana (shoulder) long tossed in Florida Thursday, Jan. 12, and said he has been doing 25 throws at up to 90 feet for three weeks on flat ground. He is hoping to move back to 110 feet Friday, Jan. 13. Santana also hopes to be on a normal spring training routine with the other pitchers in camp starting Feb. 22.

SP | Yu Darvish | free agent | Free Agents, Fantasy,
The Texas Rangers are becoming more optimistic that they can reach an agreement to sign Japanese League SP Yu Darvish, according to a major league source. If they sign Darvish, it's unlikely that they can afford free-agent 1B Prince Fielder (Brewers).

SP | Mike Pelfrey | New York Mets | Fantasy,
The New York Mets' projected 2012 rotation is as follows: SPs Johan Santana, R.A. Dickey, Jonathon Niese, Mike Pelfrey and Dillon Gee.

SP | Ryan Vogelsong | San Francisco Giants | Fantasy,
San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong will earn $3 million this year and $5 million in 2013. The team owns a $6.5 million option for the 2014 with a $300,000 buyout. Vogelsong can make an extra $300,000 in incentives in the first two years; he will get $50,000 each for 180, 185 and 190 innings and $75,000 each for 195 and 200 innings. He projects to be the team's fourth starter this year behind SPs Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner.


Relief Pitcher

The Cleveland Indians signed free-agent RP Chris Ray (Mariners) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Thursday, Jan. 12.

The Boston Red Sox are looking at free-agent RP Vicente Padilla (Dodgers) as he works out in the Nicaraguan Winter League. He is reportedly touching 95-96 mph again.
