Quarterback

QB | Joe Webb | Minnesota Vikings | Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Joe Webb will remain at quarterback for the team. "No, we really want to see Joe as a quarterback," Frazier said. "He's a tremendous athlete, and he can do some other things, but to be fair to Joe and our team, we need to let him concentrate on quarterback, not having it in the back of his mind, 'Am I going to be moved to receiver?' Who knows? He may end up being our No. 2 quarterback, and now you're one injury away from that guy being in the game. So we want to have the best guy in the No. 2 spot. If it's Joe, it's Joe. If it's Christian (Ponder), it's Christian."

QB | John Beck | Washington Redskins | Injury
Washington Redskins QB John Beck (groin) was limited to 7-on-7 drills in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, because of a groin that remains sore. Beck moved fine but the team does not want to have him execute bootlegs and rollouts yet. QB Rex Grossman took all the snaps with the first-team offense during the 11-on-11 session.

QB | Terrelle Pryor | NCAA | Draft, Free Agents
Former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor plans to work out for scouts Friday, Aug. 12, in a Pro Day workout at an undisclosed location in Pittsburgh, even though he has not yet been declared eligible for the Aug. 17 supplemental draft.

QB | David Garrard | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury, Fantasy
Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard (back) would like to play in the team's first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 11, but he is not going to do anything to risk aggravating his back injury further. Garrard was at practice Monday, Aug. 8, but did not take any snaps. He said his back is feeling better, but he still isn't ready to run around and take hits. If he cannot play in the first preseason game, rookie QB Blaine Gabbert would likely get the starting nod.

QB | Matt Hasselbeck | Tennessee Titans | Fantasy
Tennessee Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck said he wouldn't be surprised to play a little more during the team's first preseason game because he did not spend the offseason with the team. He noted the offense is starting to become more comfortable for him, and said the team's offensive line has been very helpful during some early errors with his cadence.

Running Back

RB | Montario Hardesty | Cleveland Browns | Injury
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee), who is apparently still recovering from a knee injury that wiped out his 2010 season, gave no timetable for his return. The Browns insist he is not still hurt.

RB | Chris Johnson | Tennessee Titans | Fantasy
Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson did not report Tuesday, Aug. 9, continuing his training camp absence, which has reached 12 days. Tuesday, Aug. 9, is the deadline for players under contract to report to their clubs in order to earn an accrued season toward free agency. Johnson, who has two years left on his contract, appears determined to secure a lucrative long-term deal, rather than an accrued season toward free agency.

RB | Jahvid Best | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (toe) ran well in 11-on-11 drills during practice Tuesday, Aug. 9. He looked solid on multiple between-the-tackles power runs, and has regained the extra speed last season's turf toe injuries robbed from him. Best maintains he's ready to handle the extra workload created by the injury to RB Mikel Leshoure (Achilles').

RB | Michael Turner | Atlanta Falcons | Fantasy
Atlanta Falcons RB Gartrell Johnson is seeing action with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, with RB Michael Turner (personal) out for personal reasons.

RB | Jerome Harrison | Detroit Lions | Transaction, Free Agents
The Detroit Lions have signed free-agent RBs Jerome Harrison (Eagles) and Mike Bell (Browns). Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

RB | Mike Bell | Detroit Lions | Transaction, Free Agents

RB | Ryan Mathews | San Diego Chargers | Injury, Fantasy
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (leg) is unlikely to play in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 11. He has been hampered by a slightly strained muscle in his upper leg. "In the early preseason games, we always err on the side of caution," head coach Norv Turner said.

RB | Maurice Morris | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions RB Maurice Morris (hand) remains sidelined due to a broken right hand. His return date is unclear.

RB | Mark Ingram | New Orleans Saints | Fantasy
New Orleans Saints rookie RB Mark Ingram has turned heads during training camp, showing power, shiftiness and breakaway ability.

RB | Darren McFadden | Oakland Raiders | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden (face), who is sidelined with an orbital bone fracture, said last year's production was just a taste of what is to come in the future. "Last year was the real Darren McFadden," McFadden said. "The Raider Nation can look forward to a lot more of that."

Head coach Hue Jackson is counting on McFadden to be the focus of the team's offensive attack again this season. "Darren McFadden is to me one of the most complete and elite runners in this league. Obviously, he had a very good season last year. He's going to build on that, and I see a young man who is ahead of the curve of where he was last year, seeing his reads, sticking the ball in the right spots, accelerating, knowing when to decelerate," Jackson said.

Fullback

FB | Mike Tolbert | San Diego Chargers | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Running back by committee may be appearing in San Diego, as San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is talking about using RBs Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert together this season.

"I don't know if (Mathews) will be one of the leading rushers because I think the emergence of Tolbert gives us a chance to have a one-two punch. Tolbert gives us a nice changeup. Obviously he's a physical, hard-to-tackle, punishing runner and Ryan has great speed, so it's a good situation," Turner said. Turner went on to say that his current mindset is to use both runners this season. "I think if you have guys that are diverse, you can use two," he noted.

Mathews didn't sound like he had a problem with the time share, saying the ability to have a one-two punch will really wear down defenses. "We can both take it to the house. That's going to be hard on defenses," Mathews noted. Tolbert also chipped in, saying that nobody on the team has a selfish attitude.

FB | Heath Evans | Free Agent | Free Agents
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said the team will not look to re-sign free-agent FB Heath Evans.

WR | Darrius Heyward-Bey | Oakland Raiders | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (undisclosed) went through a full practice Monday, Aug. 8. He sat out most of the first nine days of training camp, mostly just doing personal drills during the times he was active. Heyward-Bey wouldn't say what was ailing him, but he did rule out having problems with his hamstring. As long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he should be on the field Thursday, Aug. 11, for the team's first preseason game.

WR | Legedu Naanee | Carolina Panthers | Fantasy
Carolina Panthers WR Legedu Naanee is hoping to capitalize on his knowledge of the team's offensive system and step ahead of the other receivers still trying to learn it. "With the other receivers not really knowing what's going on yet and me being able to help out with the nuances of the offense, I'm looking to take advantage of that and have a big year. It's exciting," Naanee said. He said the Panthers' offensive system isn't that different to what he played in with the San Diego Chargers, noting much of it is the same but the terminology has changed a little and there are a few other variations.

WR | Steve E. Smith | Free Agent | Injury, Transaction, Free Agents, Fantasy
Free-agent WR Steve E. Smith (knee) visited the New York Giants Monday, Aug. 8, and he had his surgically-repaired knee checked out. WR | Brandon Lloyd | Denver Broncos | Fantasy
Denver Broncos WR Brandon Lloyd has been showing tremendous ability to separate himself from cornerbacks during training camp, including Champ Bailey, the team's top corner. Lloyd exploded last season for Denver; if his training camp play is any indication, it does not appear he will be in for a steep drop-off in production this season. He continues to show contortionist-type moves while going after the football. The Broncos may look for him to play the WR Steve Smith role in John Fox's Carolina Panthers' offense.

WR | Devin Hester | Chicago Bears | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester, who has been named the starting flanker, will be in for a larger role on offense this season. The team's coaching staff evaluated game film from last season and recognized Hester was not used enough. "He'll be a huge part of the offense," head coach Lovie Smith said.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz said Hester played even better than Martz thought he did. "We had trouble getting him the ball, but I don't foresee that being an issue this year," Martz added. So far in training camp, Hester has been standing out and a favorite target of QB Jay Cutler. Cutler said Hester isn't thinking while on the field now, showing Hester is growing comfort in his second season in Martz's system. Hester said he spent 70 percent of his pre-snap thoughts on his assignment each play, with the other 30 percent going toward reading the defense. This year, he said he is spending 100 percent of the time reading defenses.

The team does not plan to take him out of his roles on special teams, but Martz said the team is going to find a balance so they are sure Hester remains fresh this season.

WR | Johnny Knox | Chicago Bears | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy

San Diego Chargers rookie WR Vincent Brown (quadriceps) did not practice again Sunday, Aug. 7, causing concern he may be falling behind. Head coach Norv Turner isn't too worried at this point, as he noted Brown spent a lot of time working out with QB Philip Rivers during the offseason.

WR | Patrick Crayton | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
San Diego Chargers WR Patrick Crayton ran the team's Wildcat formation during practice Sunday, Aug. 7. "We have a lot of confidence in Jason," head coach Jim Schwartz said. "If we have a pressure kick, I'd trust Jason to do it. It's just been a matter of health. He's gotten a little bit older, and the last two training camps he's been hurt. But as far as making the kicks and things like that, I have no problem."
