Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals RP Mitchell Boggs was inserted into the starting rotation at Triple-A Memphis. This was done as insurance for the club's starting rotation and to give Boggs a chance to improve his secondary pitches. Boggs' changeup and slider had become inconsistent. General manager John Mozeliak insisted Boggs' role change at Memphis doesn't mean his future in St. Louis ultimately resides in the rotation; instead it offers him the best opportunity for regular work. Boggs will throw 30-40 pitches in a start Wednesday, May 25, before throwing 40-50 pitches Saturday, May 28. He'll work every fifth day on gradually larger pitch counts.

Oakland Athletics RP Brian Fuentes criticized manager Bob Geren for bringing him in to non-closing situations of late. Fuentes talked before the game about his frustration over being brought into a tie game in extra innings Sunday, May 22, against the San Francisco Giants, an unusual occurrence for a closer in a road game. He was brought into a tie game in the eighth inning the following day. "I thought the games in San Francisco were some unorthodox managing, but I thought it was maybe the National League, maybe that had something to do with it," Fuentes said. "But tonight was pretty unbelievable."

Fuentes said he has zero communication with Geren and rated his handling of the bullpen "pretty poorly." "There's just a lack of communication. I don't think anybody really knows which direction he's headed," Fuentes said.

"I could use anybody late in the game," Geren said. "It's been that way, everybody knows that. If there's a certain part of the lineup (that's good) to use (Fuentes) earlier, I'll use him earlier."

Fuentes added: "He should share those comments with us rather than you guys."
