Mattingly wants to use RP Vicente Padilla as the primary guy in the ninth inning with Broxton sidelined, although the team will be hesitant to use him on back-to-back days. "It's Chief, pretty much," Mattingly said, referring to Padilla by his nickname. "Back-to-back, we've got to see the number of pitches and how it goes. We have to find out. If he gets too many pitches, we won't do it. If it's a typical inning, 12 to 15 pitches, we'll see how he comes back. He's willing to do it."

Mattingly could turn to RP Hong-Chih Kuo on days that Padilla is not available. RP Kenley Jansen, who was just recalled from the minors, is another option.

Broxton does not think his injury is at all related to his second-half collapse last season. "It probably started in the spring and caught up to me now," Broxton said. "The ligament is fine, there are no chips or anything. It's just bruised."
